News Chris Evans to Voice Buzz Lightyear in Origin Movie, Lightyear

One is that the series adds a large cast of fun supporting characters and develops the universe around Buzz, and they've just ignored all of that.

Not "ignored," just developed their own take on the concept. Different variations on a concept aren't in competition with each other or trying to replace each other. They're just alternative ways of playing with ideas. I mean, come on, it's a franchise about toys. Children playing with toys don't limit themselves to a single rigid continuity. They play around and go wherever their imagination takes them.

Is this supposed to be in the Toy Story universe? In this movie the tech looks much more advanced than we have seen in the Toy Story movies.

I'll have to think of this as just a movie about a big-chinned guy who goes to space, rather than anything familiar.

Meh, no Tim Allen, me no watchy..

Read a story on why Squid Games was so popular.. Because it wasn't a Redo, Rehash, Remake, Reboot, Reimagine, Etc. It was some thing "New". This.. zero interest.

Eh, his voice is starting to show his age a bit. They had similar issues with Craig T. Nelson being so much older than Mr. Incredible. Just imagine that the makers of the toy couldn't afford to hire the actor to voice the toy, so they got someone who happens to sound like Tim Allen in our universe. Remember, Tom's brother Jim Hanks voices Woody in most of the Toys and Video Games

I still think The Incredibles 2 should have been set at least 10 years after the first movie. You solve the problem of the actors' voices and have more interesting story opportunities.

I think it's supposed to be a fictional movie that Andy could go see in the theater, and the toy line is based on the movie.

I always figured the animated series was supposed to be the show that the toy was based on. But I suppose it could've been a show created to promote the toy, which was in turn based on this movie.

I do wonder why a toy based on a live-action movie (in-universe) would be so unrealistic-looking rather than modeled on the real actor. But then, we live in a universe that has Funko Pops and Lego minifigs, so what do I know?

I could see an in-universe history where the cartoon is very loosely based on the movie, and they introduce all sorts of wild new stuff in the cartoon, then the cartoon gets super popular and that's why all the merchandise is the animated Buzz.

I wonder if this movie being in development is why Buzz Lightyear of Star Command isn't on Disney+, they don't want to confuse the backstory. Or maybe they are just waiting to release it closer to the move as part of the promotional campaign.

My problem with the idea of the animated series being part of Toy Story's reality, though, is that it includes the Little Green Men from the Pizza Planet claw game as part of Buzz's universe. Nothing in the movie suggested they were connected with the Star Command brand in any way, and Buzz didn't recognize them.

I was unaware of this and actually find it really fun looking. One, it looks like a more serious take on the character and presenting a whole new universe. I imagine, at least from the scant information we have, that this is another take on the character in the Toy Story universe, so, as noted by others, something Andy could go watch. Personally, I love the space age style, almost atomic-punk esque feel to it.

We have 20 billion+ interpretations of Batman. Why is this one so far afield? :wtf::wtf::shrug:

I feel like the avoiding of any actual speech from Chris Evans as Buzz in that trailer other than a 'AND' at the end of it is because it is Chris Evans doing the voice and not Tim Allen.

*edit* fixed Chris Pratt to Chris Evans

Acknowledging the conceit that the Masters of the Universe toyline came first, I view this as similar to that franchise; while all the characters are there, the 'live-action' film tells a different, or at least a different version of, the story those characters are participating in. Like Christopher said in post 42, they're variations on the core concept.

Honestly, I think Chris Evans is a much better fit for this version of the character than Tim Allen would have been.
The trailer looked pretty good, and I'm looking at this as a new, more grounded reboot of the character, which is kind of what it is.
