There is a school of thought where "Smileys" are created out of nothing but ASCII characters, like this:

But "Emoticons" are small drawn icons that symbolise emotions, like this:

I thought "Emoticons" were periodic gatherings where Smiley fans buy stuff, get autographs and drink to excess.
