Final Cut Grade

I wonder if it'd be possible to take the "final cut", blow it up to 4x3 with the edges cropped, and edit in the missing bits from the original?

Hmmm....

Maybe I can re-record the pilot off digital cable next time SyFy runs it and begin a little project?

Or you could just get season one on DVD, since each and every episode from day one is on widescreen, there. That'd make it look a lot better.

I just watched it. Thought it was quite excellent and all the changes were for the better.

I almost wish they'd give a similar treatment to Lost City.

What changes does Lost City need? It's not like they could get Higgenson (not to mention the other actors) back to re-film all of Weir's scenes, and the big action set piece with the navy fleet's destruction was cut because it was prohibitively expensive. I don't see that changing for a recut DVD version.

Hey does the version of Lost City in the season 7 DVD boxsetcount as a recut becuase they combined both episodes into a movie length one.

I bought it and watched it on the 21st. I enjoyed the wide screen movie feel and all of the changes. Like the guy said, he made changes because he wanted to. And for those who don't like them, tough!

I thought it was a enjoyable movie, glad I bought it.

Was it originally aired as two parts, or only cut into two later? I've only seen it as one movie-length episode, and wouldn't want to see it any other way. That said, it would be nice if it wasn't packed in with so many other things on that fifth disc of the seventh season. The picture quality could be better.

As stated, the Kawalsky cliffhanger was cut so that the film could stand on its own as a self-contained movie rather than a series pilot. As for the MacGyver reference being cut, maybe it was deemed too distracting or too dated.

As for the "room of queens," my recollection is that the queen candidates (if that's what we're talking about) were in rather diaphanous outfits -- certainly nothing as graphic as Sha're's full frontal scene, but perhaps revealing enough to be considered inappropriate.

As for the omission of David Arnold's Stargate theme, that was probably a money-saving move so they wouldn't have to pay him royalties. A bit odd, since they used Arnold's theme in both of the SG-1 DVD movies; but maybe this is a different case because it's a recut of a previously released production, and maybe that creates some of the same kind of red tape that leads to DVD releases of old TV shows having the pop songs replaced with generic music. Just speculating, though.

Dave...

Are you sure? I'd understood the first few seasons were done in 4x3 and actual 16x9 episodes weren't done up until some time after the series moved its cable run to SciFiChannel.

That was supposed to be one of the pluses of the new release. It being in widescreen.

The first DVD boxed set is in widescreen?

According to Brad Wright, they cut that because he felt it didn't make sense to have a room of potential hosts. Instead, they wanted to give the idea of them grabbing a potential host, having them be checked out, rejected, then go and getting another one.

Not quite. They loved the DA music, but they didn't like how much of the pilot was just tracked in bits from the movie. They wanted to give the pilot an original score of its own (which, I am sure, builds on DA's original score). It was a way to also make it more "in-line" with the series.

Every episode was shot for 16:9 and are presented as such on the DVDs. However, I believe season one and possibly season two were shot on 16mm which means they may not look so great for any potential Blu-Ray release.

You may be confusing this with shooting specifically for HD which didn't start on SG-1 until either "Lockdown" or "Zero Hour" in season eight (I can't quite remember which). Atlantis was shot with HD cameras from day one.

The use of 30mm film cameras from season 3 of SG-1 onwards does not preclude the possibility of a Blu-Ray release although the CGI special effects were prepared for standard definition television broadcast, not HD. Most likely someone would have to pay to have those redone.

Brad doesn't say either way in the commentary track.

Again from the commentary track: Brad seems to imply that it was cut for pacing.

Possibly, but there are bits of the movie score that still remain.

Overall, I was disappointed in the commentary track. Brad and RDA talk SOME about the film, but a lot of the time is spent on personal remembrances about the show in general and not addressing the action on screen.

Well while the first three seasons of the show was shot in 16mm the visual effects were done in 35mm.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_SG-1#Filming

The first three seasons of Stargate SG-1 were filmed on 16 mm film, notwithstanding scenes involving visual effects that had always been shot on 35 mm film for various technical reasons. After a test run with the season 3 finale, "Nemesis", Stargate SG-1 switched to 35 mm film for all purposes at the beginning of season 4. SG-1 was filmed in HD beginning with season 8.

Ah, my mistake. The "filmed in HD beginning with season 8" part is slightly misleading. The opening two-parter wasn't shot for HD, I am certain of that. This comes from the DVD commentaries.

However, it might still be a problem to release all of Stargate SG-1 on Blu-Ray. At best, you are going to see some improvement in the visual effects.

And a hell of a lot less visual artifacts because of the use of a modern compression algorithm. :techman:

That said, it wouldn't be the first show with SD effects released on HD--Firefly did so already. It all depends on whether there's a finished version of Stargate that's cut on film, or if it was all edited on tape...

Darkwing, much of this is discussed here.

16mm, though not containing the resolution of 35mm, has more resolution than HD. So all the episodes shot in that format would look great on Blu-Ray. :)

The packaging is really cheap, but I love the new version. However I don't like that they changed the pyramid.
