Children of the 80's Unite!

Yeah, Last Crusade is my fave, too. Though, I will hesitantly admit that I really like Temple of Doom as well as KOTCS.... *hides*

I was born in 1980, and remember seeing many of those movies. Great, great lists so far, and I only a couple to mention here:

Back To The Beach.
Tell me you're not sucked in from the moment you watch Bobby explain their story up to that point, and then they cut to the big credits intro with "Catch a Ride on a Wave". God, I love that movie and wish I lived on the beach in the 80's! :D

"So we're going to Hawaii, not such a bad place for a kid who wears only black."

Big
.
Everything about this movie is like a capsule of the 1980's. I love it from start to finish, and it makes me feel like a kid again! :D

J.

I was born in 1980, too...:techman:

Great mention of Big. I fondly remember Tom Hank's other comedy of the same era Splash! My friends and I would dress up as Madison and pretend to be mermaids...speaking of mermaids, how about The Little Mermaid? I think that came out in '89.

Anyone mention Adventures in Babysitting? Footloose? Loved those ones too!

GI JOE: The Movie and Transformers: The Movie :)

One that I THINK was 80s (it certainly was 80s style) was one of the b-grade "sexploitation" films called "Up the Creek".

The 80s new how to produce legit movie soundtracks with killer pop songs and even most movies had kickin' incidental synth beats. I live in the 80s in my head when I get down.

I actually think the music is one of the few major flaws of eighties movies. Not only does it make so many movies seem terribly dated (and I subscribe to a philosophy that the best movies retain a 'timeless' quality), but it's often so over-the-top kooky that it undercuts serious moments and stories in movies with its style. That synth stuff is generally super corny and annoying. There are certain movies where I think it works well (i.e. "Scarface" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off"), but much of the time it's just very grating and cringe-inducing.

A good example is a movie I just saw for the first time - "About Last Night...". It's such an intelligently and insightfully written movie about why relationships between women and men are hard (especially once they try to start living together) with great performances by its whole cast. It would have been just about perfect if not for the gratuitous musical montages set to tunes that are all painfully lame eighties cheese.

Not sure if its been mentioned yet:

Clue: The Movie

Still love that movie! Perfect casting, fantastic production design (I want that house!) and a crackling script!

What's your fave ending?

Got to be the third one. I always wanted to do a little youtube project with an additional lost ending or two, if one I had the time.

Thought of another one I don't think has been mentioned: Manhunter.

Also the '80s was the era of the classic network miniseries, someone already mentioned Irwin Allen's "Alice in Wonderland", and of course there was "V" and "V: The Final Battle".

But does anyone remember these:

The First Olympics: Athens 1896
Napoleon and Josephine
Amerika
Jack the Ripper (w/ Michael Caine)
Shogun
and of course all three books of North and South

I guess '80s TV series would require a whole new thread.

In the 80's, if a friend of yours stated that he had "Excessive Flatulence" you'd immediately understand that to be an album from a British punk band

How about the Indiana Jones films. All three of them came out in the '80's (another '80's child here, although I was ten in 1980 and 19 in 1989).

There's also:

Space Camp
The Last Starfighter
The first two Lethal Weapons
Rockys 2, 3, and 4
The First Die Hard
Batman (Keaton and Nicholson)
Scrooged
Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi
Star Treks 2, 3, 4, and 5 (although these, and the Star Wars films should be a given)

Apologies if somebody else already listed these.

I remember being in school when the teacher told us the Challenger exploded, and we stopped everything to watch the news. :(

I remember being in school when the teacher told us the Challenger exploded, and we stopped everything to watch the news. :(

I remember that too, except we didn't stop the class. The teacher next door stuck her head in and yelled the news to our teacher, then the class went on as usual after a moment of silence.
