Children of the 80's Unite!

Plomeek Broth

Commander

I am a child of the 80s and always look back at the movies I watched during that period as a magical time. When I see them now, it makes me happy and sad at the same time yearning for those innocent days. I am building my dvd collection back up and want suggestions (all genres) on films others love from the 80s. Here are some off the top of my head for starters ( I don't have a lot of these yet either but hopefully soon!)

The Goonies
Gremlins
The Burbs
The Lost Boys
Stand By Me
Labyrinth
Neverending Story
Poltergeist
Red Dawn
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Dances With Wolves
Glory
Young Guns
Platoon
Superman Movies (the 80s ones)
Roadhouse
Top Gun
Aliens
Robocop
Predator
Terminator
Rambo
Rocky
Back To the Future
Vacation
 These movies make me feel good after a rough day at work

Name the many other 80s films that rawk!
PS - I know some I mentioned are franchises and some films may be in the 70s or 90s! Also, do you have any particular comments about any of the mentioned films or any that you bring up (pros, cons, how much you watch it, etc.)

A good list.

Stand By Me is one of my favorite movies, I just love everything about it. And there's a lot of great memorable lines from it that my sisters and I repeated quite often.

The Goonies I never liked for some reason. Ferris Bueller...I hate the movie! It reminds me of the book Catcher in the Rye, which I also despised, yet everyone else seems to love. I don't like stories where the main character skips out on school I guess. I never skipped class and took school really seriously and it bothers me when others don't do the same. I know it's just a movie, but it's hard to like the main character when all I keep thinking about it is what he's missing out on in the classroom.

Robocop...I didn't care much for the movie but I have fond memories of it because my family had one of those VHS board games that you play on the TV that was Robocop themed.

Risky Business and the Breakfast Club, Wizards(midnight movies), and Trading Places. And no collection is complete without Pretty Woman. (yeah, chic flick but lot's of fun.)

I love Booger's line in Risky Business something along the lines of "Sometimes you just have to say **** it"

Real Genius
Beverly Hills Cop
Friday the 13th
Willow
ET
Say Anything
Dream A Little Dream
License to Drive
Silver Bullet
All the Right Moves
Big
Splash
The Last Starfighter
War Games
Space Camp
Jaws 3 in 3D
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Revenge of the Nerds
Porky's
Back to School
The Outsiders

That was a great decade for movies. Particular PG films that were actually entertaining for kids and adults instead of a lot of the movies that seem to get that rating now.

I've been showing my 9-year-old son a bunch of 80s movies over the last couple of weeks. He had already seen the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies, so I showed him, ET, The Princess Bride, Gremlins, The Last Starfighter, and Ghostbusters. Next up is The Goonies, Beetlejuice, and Back to the Future.

When he gets a bit older, we'll move on to Aliens, Terminator, and one of my all-time favorites: Heathers.

Short Circuit , Explorers and Flight Of The Navigator probably deserve to be on that list too, perhaps Transformers as well.

Masters Of The Universe is probably the other unmentioned one I did see in the 80s that I remember (and own on DVD) I'm not claiming it's a classic though :D

Considering your avatar, I'm surprised you didn't mention The Empire Strikes Back... and while we're at it, Return of the Jedi. And hey, this is a Star Trek board -- there were 4 ST movies that decade!

A lot of good ones have already been listed... I'll add The Thing, Conan the Barbarian, and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.

I figured Star Wars and Trek were obvious. I would include ESB, ROTJ, ST 2, 4, and 6.

Conan is awesome. Great acting and quotes.

I was born in '85, so I was really a Baby of the 80s, but I enjoy and adore many of the films on your list.

Here's a couple not-so-known movies that I grew up watching, both of which were released the year I was born:

Alice in Wonderland (the TV movie featuring Carol Channing, Carol Burnett, Sammy Davis Jr., and more)

The Adventures of Mark Twain (claymation movie that introduced, developed, and cemented my love of all things Twain)

Joy

The Black Hole
Return to Oz
Something Wicked This Way Comes
Tron
Lucas
Creepshow
The Karate Kid 1 and 2

* a couple I mentioned above may have been in the year 1990 (oops)

Stupid Double Post!

Big Trouble in Little China
The Muppet Movie
The Shining
Cujo
Christine
Maximum Overdrive (lol)
The Fog
Crocodile Dundee
Police Academy

-Masters of the Universe
-Ghostbusters
-Ghostbusters II
-Seaseme Street: Follow That Bird (hated this when I was a kid haha)

ROBOCOP truely a 80's cinema MASTERPIECE. As well as TRON & The Last Starfighter (TLS really could be a great re-make)
