Chick-fil-A digging themselves a hole

The CEO of a company has every right to decide what they want to donate their money to. Some may like the cause(s) they choose, and others may not like them. At the end of the day, the same freedom that gives them that choice also gives you, the individual consumer, the choice of giving that company your business or not. It is as simple as that.

I eat at Chick-fil-A because I like the food. That won't change, and I will continue to eat there, because when it comes to going someplace for food, it's all about just that... the food, not the politics, religion, or social views of the CEO.

The CEO, and his corporation, is funding the very people and organizations who want to make my friends second class citizens. Fuck that.

Well one thing is for sure now... none of us should expect to see any Chick-fil-A's popping up in Greenwich Village or any new ones in San Francisco now.

^ I thought Chick-Fil-A was a Southern thing. I didn't know they were expanding that far outside their home territory.

They are expanding. The one in Chicago opened about a year ago, right as I was moving. Previous to that I had only seen one in Ohio. I'm in the bay area now and we are getting one here. Their bigotry is nothing new though, so I won't be patronizing them ever again.

From Wikipedia:

Chick-fil-A (referring to "filet") is an American fast food restaurant chain headquartered in the Atlanta suburb of College Park, Georgia, United States, specializing in chicken entrées[1][2] and is known for promoting the company founder's Christian values.[3] Long associated with the Southern United States, where it has been a cultural icon, the chain has expanded. As of April 2012, Chick-fil-A has 1,614 restaurants in 39 states and the District of Columbia, and is focusing future growth in the American Midwest, the Philippines, Mexico, and Southern California.[4]

To some individuals, filling their stomachs with good food trumps the needs of others.

Given this, why is there the sudden outcry? Couldn't the attitude they are now being criticised for have been inferred from their company policies?

How is it sudden? People have been talking about Chick-Fil-A's anti-gay corporate mindset for years. This recent incident is just more out in the open than some of their other practices have been, and is therefore getting more attention.

Sorry, we don't get a lot of Chick-Fil-A news in Ireland. It's the first time I've heard of them.

I fully admit that I would have a hard time avoiding the temptation of going to Chick-Fil-A (if there was one in my area). I've only eaten there twice, but the sandwiches were delicious. It would be extremely difficult for me to resist.

Really? You find their food that good that you find it "difficult to resist?" I mean if you like the food there, fine, that's one thing but we're talking about a fast-food restaurant here not Tavern on the Green or something 5-star, high-quality restaurant. Hell, we're not even talking about a local restaurant or chain of restaurants good at a particular type of local cuisine.

It's a fast food restaurant specializing in freaking chicken sandwiches. If continuing to eat there is worth it to you considering what you now know the CEO supports, where some of the money is going, that's fine. But don't pretend the food is so awesome you think it's worth giving up some morality to.

Probably over half of all restaurants have donated to Republicans, and many of the rest donated to Obama back when he wouldn't come out in support of gay marriage. Many others, and probably most Italian and Mexican restaurants, have donated to Catholic charities that oppose abortion and gay marriage. Many have donated to the troops (evil oppressors!), and all willingly buy fuel from big oil companies. If you're not willing to "sacrifice" at least some morality, you'd be down to only having three vegan restaurants in New York or LA where you could eat, owned by the only gay chefs in town whose checklist of charities and personal donations doesn't include at least one organization or politician you don't like, who bicycle to work and live in a self-sufficient solar powered eco-friendly house.

When food becomes political, the taste turns bitter.

I don't investigate every place I eat but if someone has such a public record of supporting causes like Chick-fil-a has, I'm going to pay attention.

It's one thing if a restaurant or other chain's owners/CEO's decide to endorse a certain political ideology or stance. It's another thing when the head of that company comes out and says how actively he's against a certain ideology or group of people. And that profits made through the business go to support groups actively trying to curtail the rights of others.

There's a local restaurant to me that makes some of the best BBQ in the city, in fact it won a local contest proclaiming it as the best restaurant chain in the city. Like CFA it's closed on Sundays most likely due to religious reasons. But I've never heard of the owner expressing negative views towards a group of people or donating money to support movements against people. So I'll eat there.

But when I heard how vocal and actively CFA spoke out against homosexuals and homosexual rights I decided to stop eating there. I can't support such ways of thinking.

It'd be one thing if this CEO/owner simply spoke his personal views but he's spoken these views not as himself but in an "official capacity" as operator of the company and the company makes donation to groups wanting to curb the freedoms of homosexuals. Sorry, that's something very different than expressing views.

And, really, I think the ACLU or other groups should investigate the hiring practices of Chick-Fil-A to see if they discriminate against homosexuals or even non-Christians.

I really wonder how much "support" CFA would be getting if the owner had made comments against interracial marriage, made comments against blacks, supported White-Supremacist groups or basically acted like how businesses acted in the South before the Civil Rights Movements there in the 1960s.
