Chekov's fate

Depends on how realistic TPTB depict the job of a nurse. In large clincs, in hospitals, and in the military nurses are the ones running the show and their jobs are very wide ranging, the doctors have fairly narrow roles to play.
To a certain extent use of the characters is about willingness of the writers to add story elements for them. I thought making Chekov chief engineer made about as much sense as promoting Chapel to chief engineer. They just wanted to include the character more and could not think of anything to do at navigationnin a movie context. Beyond used him far more effectively IMO.

I hope they keep it minimalist and keep the door open:

Kirk "Where's Chekov?"
Spock "Still recovering from the encounter with the space hippies, Captain."
Kirk "Space herpes? I had that once on Rigel VII. It burns like a..."
Rand "Space HIPPIES, Captain..."
Kirk "That will be all, Yeoman."

Why not put Jaylah in Chekov's spot? People seemed to like her, and it would add another female presence onscreen.
I think she'd be better in engineering. Why not promote the woman who replaced Chekov in Into Darkness to take his place? She need not become one of the "seven", just be the main person at the navigation console. Jaylah could be Chekov's replacement as a principal character.

It would indeed be more logical to have Jaylah be an engineer, because as we saw in STB, that's exactly what she's good at: engineering. And she has an easy rapport with Scotty.

That said, it would be nice to see her again, so if they have to put her on the bridge for that to happen, I'm all for it. (She could man the bridge engineering station, for example.)

I was thinking security, so she has an excuse to go on away missions. The engineering could be a bonus for missions

I would love for her to be a part of the 7, adding the diversity of gender and species to the mix.

My plan is twofold....(and I thought of it in my fanfic movie screenplay!)
1: Chekov is reassigned offscreen to the "Department of Temporal Investigations", which gets mentioned in dialogue somewhere. In actuality ("borrowing" what happened to Prime timeline Chekov in Star Trek Online), he (maybe?) becomes a Temporal Agent in this reality. This would allow him to reappear on the Enterprise in novels or graphic novels (cartoons, if they are ever made, would be problematic due to needing a voice, and live action is impossible without a re-cast), and then leave again, with little to no explanation (other than - "special. Temporal Investigation assignment"?)
2: We're a little short on women and South Asians on the bridge, so one of those would be good! I was thinking of maybe Jasminder Choudhury, as she is pretty kick-ass (from what I understand of her character on Memory Beta), although she is TNG Novelverse.

Sure is. Have a line early on in the next movie establishing that Chekov's been reassigned to the Reliant.

Works for me.

As has been noted before, Chekov will be missed, but he's not so essential that he needs to be recast. TOS got by for entire season without him.

(To be clear, I'm talking about the character here, not Yelchin.)
