Characters you like that everyone else hates

Romo Lampkin

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Greenberg: This guy was cool though a bit of an ass but ultimately an alright dude who was deeply unhappy with his life and this discontent manifested itself in sporadic outbursts of self pitying assholery. But otherwise, he would be someone I'd get along with, a deep interest in music, interested in intellectual topics, generally not going out of his way to crush others, conform to societal expectations (most of which are bs) and put on a fake persona. A lot of people hate him for his immaturity, self obsession and generally being a bit of a fuck up (I think carpentry is a fine job, worth more than being a Goldman Sachs drone but whatever). I mean people really hate this guy because he had the daring to pursue a dream and it didn't work out but he was never going to fit into conventional society either. I think the hatred people have for this character demonstrates the kick someone when they're down primate instinct, particularly when they're different or defied the conventional route.

The ranty dude from Angels in America: The dude that went on socialist rants. A lot of people hate others with strong opinions without the fear to censor them, it's a kind of tribal, keep your head down and shut up mentality but I seriously enjoyed listening to his rants, probably because I agreed with them but on the other hand, I could listen to Varg Vikernes rants and I couldn't disagree more with him, ditto for Donald Trump.

Gul Dukat: Everyone hates this guy, but I think he was misjudged. He was always trying to do good but in a difficult situation, and ultimately he had enough of people generally mistrusting/hating him so he thought, fuck it, I'll just be pure evil and try to take over the entire galaxy through Bajoran black magic. Fair enough, I mean if you were an administrator in a corrupt system charged with an unruly, religiously devout populace intent on fucking things up for you, while you're trying to do your humanitarian best, then everyone hating you after the fact, and ok this person may have a picadillo for swinging parties (everyone is fallible), but essentially you are the black sheep forever, and maybe combined with a bit of ambitious bombast, you might want to take over the galaxy, then why not? Gul Dukat is a metaphor for the Treaty of Versailles, antagonise, ostracise and bully someone long enough and they will snap and become nazis. Or whatever bogeyman you can imagine and Gul Dukat became exactly that. We should feel sorry for him to an extent. He could have been great but he was the road not taken equivalent to Sisko. No wonder they made such great adversaries.

Turning evil due to spite...definitely one of the key attributes of someone who is a good guy.
A lot of "good" people turn evil due to spite, it should be a warning for us all. Society can be judged by the way it treats its outcasts.

Who is Greenberg?

It would probably help to identify the source of the characters. Granted, I suspect most people in these parts know who Gul Dukat is, but still . . ...

A quick Google would reveal that the character is the source, so to speak, unless it's another Greenberg

Perhaps. But "Greenberg" is a pretty nondescript name, so it's not exactly as though the OP cited "Captain Nemo" or "Columbo" or whomever. How was I to know there was a show titled "Greenberg"? (Honestly, I figured it was probably somebody from "Breaking Bad' or "Mad Men" or something like that.) One might as well say "I really like that character 'Jones' or 'Brady.'"

Heck, I know several unrelated Greenbergs myself, not to mention Marvel's "Greenberg the Vampire." :)

I liked Jon Seda's carpet bagger character on Treme. He was written to be a scumbag but I kind of liked how opportunistic and ambitious he was. Unlike a lot of characters on that show, he was a focused actor in pursuing his goals and didn't default to "indignant" whenever he encountered an obstacle to those goals.

Seriously, Dukat trying to do good? He was trying to be adored by an 'inferior species'.

I liked Anna Lucia in Lost who most people hated.

Doggett and Reyes from the X Files. A lot of fans didn't really like them, but I thought that they were ok. Reyes now though, hell no. Not after the character assassination that she went through. :scream:

I was surprised to find out that some people don't enjoy the Cat Grant character on SUPERGIRL. I think Calista Flockhart is great fun in the part and steals most every scene she's in.

And, no, I don't care if if she's sympathetic or likable or a nice person or not. She's a hoot..

I'll take colorful and interesting over "likable" most any day.

Seriously, I don't see how anyone not named Donald could possibly sympathize with Dukat without completely missing the point of the character. Dukat's sole motive before Waltz was love for the idea of himself being acknowledged as superior to the Bajorans. He was never trying to 'do good.' Caputo he was not.

Season 4 makes me sympathize with Sam Healy. He strikes me now as a dumb, impressionable guy who just doesn't know how to express his desire to help people in a helpful way.

Gotta admit. I never really saw Dukat as a misunderstood, unappreciated "outcast." He was a war criminal, not a Romantic poet. :)

Joffrey, Cersei, Tywin (Game of Thrones). Conversely I hate Jon Snow but everyone else loves him.

Emperor Cartagia (Babylon 5)

I also like Gul Dukat.

Jackie Tyler on Doctor Who. She's relatable (bit self-centred but would die for her family), lonely despite her confident exterior and utterly MILFtastic but wants more than just sex even if she gives the opposite impression.

...Joffrey, (Game of Thrones).......

You have officially freaked me the fuck out.

That reminds me, Wesley. He wasn't that bad and in fact an accurate representation of an annoying teenager and I'd cut him a lot of slack for that as most of us were annoying teenagers. The cool thing is that they didn't go down the trendy delinquent route with him either, he was a total nerd/dork, which obviously reflected an intellectual non-conformist dimension which I think played a role in his dissatisfaction with Starfleet as a quasi military organisation. Ultimately he turned out to be a well mannered, considerate adult, which again is a realistic representation of how people grow up. Also he was good for the unintentional comedy of early TNG, there's little to dislike about him really.

I could see myself enjoying a beer and shooting the breeze with Gul Dukat on a fine summer's day, a top chap!
