Greenberg: This guy was cool though a bit of an ass but ultimately an alright dude who was deeply unhappy with his life and this discontent manifested itself in sporadic outbursts of self pitying assholery. But otherwise, he would be someone I'd get along with, a deep interest in music, interested in intellectual topics, generally not going out of his way to crush others, conform to societal expectations (most of which are bs) and put on a fake persona. A lot of people hate him for his immaturity, self obsession and generally being a bit of a fuck up (I think carpentry is a fine job, worth more than being a Goldman Sachs drone but whatever). I mean people really hate this guy because he had the daring to pursue a dream and it didn't work out but he was never going to fit into conventional society either. I think the hatred people have for this character demonstrates the kick someone when they're down primate instinct, particularly when they're different or defied the conventional route.
The ranty dude from Angels in America: The dude that went on socialist rants. A lot of people hate others with strong opinions without the fear to censor them, it's a kind of tribal, keep your head down and shut up mentality but I seriously enjoyed listening to his rants, probably because I agreed with them but on the other hand, I could listen to Varg Vikernes rants and I couldn't disagree more with him, ditto for Donald Trump.
Gul Dukat: Everyone hates this guy, but I think he was misjudged. He was always trying to do good but in a difficult situation, and ultimately he had enough of people generally mistrusting/hating him so he thought, fuck it, I'll just be pure evil and try to take over the entire galaxy through Bajoran black magic. Fair enough, I mean if you were an administrator in a corrupt system charged with an unruly, religiously devout populace intent on fucking things up for you, while you're trying to do your humanitarian best, then everyone hating you after the fact, and ok this person may have a picadillo for swinging parties (everyone is fallible), but essentially you are the black sheep forever, and maybe combined with a bit of ambitious bombast, you might want to take over the galaxy, then why not? Gul Dukat is a metaphor for the Treaty of Versailles, antagonise, ostracise and bully someone long enough and they will snap and become nazis. Or whatever bogeyman you can imagine and Gul Dukat became exactly that. We should feel sorry for him to an extent. He could have been great but he was the road not taken equivalent to Sisko. No wonder they made such great adversaries.
