Characters going new places / characters going nowhere

Well he and the Chief Enginneer on board Aventine have a very flirtasous conversation in Mere Mortals and even arange a date for after the war is over!

Wow. Now that's what I call character development. ;-)

Seriously, I do hope they make something out of that. Two chief engineers could easily end up encouraging each other for making better engines or even have a rivalry about who's better in their job.

Long distance relationships have their certain conflicting appeal too with seldomly seeing each other or not knowing if one can trust the other to be faithful.

We'll see.

LaForge's inability to find a mate seems to have been stopping him, a situation as yet unresolved. A better question might be: should it? Why does he need to pair up before starting a family? In the wake of Destiny, there must be plenty of orphans out there who need a good home. Just because he hasn't been able to find any happiness in love, does it preclude finding happiness in raising a child (or more, but let's start with one, yeah)?

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Hey, I think that could actually be a GREAT development! :)

Another "going places" character--an original novel character. Seems Zurin Dakal's something of a breakout character now...he sure got a lot of spotlight in Sword of Damocles, and I really hope to see more of him. :)

I'm conflicted when it comes to Kira, Ro and Shar on this end. I dn't know how else to put it. Kira goes places action-wise, but I wonder mentally... I guess its a bit early to tell about Ro. Shar I guess is still an ensign (I think), so I can't be hard on him.

Well, Shar has been gone so it's understandable that he isn't being developed. Atlhough some of the stuff we've seen does seem to hit that he might be back after he's finished it familial obligations.

I really hope Shar comes back; I quite liked him.

Though, really, when it comes to DS9-R, I have to say I think the best handled/most dynamic character was Vaughn, if for no other reason than his plethora of appearances in chronologically earlier books as well. It's like his whole 100-year character arc sprung fully formed into TrekLit all at the same time, like he'd always been there, complete with relationships with a ton of major characters throughout the years. I was always extremely impressed with how that was carried off, and the authors involved.

^I'll second Vaughn as a character's introduction that went "oh-so-right" and add him to the list of Character's going somewhere.

Going Somewhere:
-Elias Vaughn
-Jean-Luc Picard
-Worf
-Sonya Gomez (At least Captain at somepoint... lol)

Going nowhere:
-Geordi Laforge (Until very recently, )
-The Doctor (cries)
-Neelix ("Aventine" over to him and emigrate a Talaxian Colony to the Federation already)

^I honestly never got the Neelix hate.

He was generally cordial, but might also have been playing you at the same time.
Could talk himself out of almost any situation and only threatened violence when he ran out of options.

I think people just tend to remember him as the guy tucking Naomi Wildman into bed and annoying Tuvok all the time.

He did the first because he was alone, without family (who died horrifically, btw) and was just looking for a familial connection and the second because he thought it was funny.

I'm sure that there are deeper facets to Neelix (as to mist fictional characters), but personally, I couldn't stand him.

If the writers find ways to use him in interesting ways - more power to them

I think Picard is going forward - thank the good Lord almighty that he might just be putting the entire Borg monster away forever. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

In terms of going backward or not progressing much I have to put Crusher in this category (at least from what we've read to date).

The problem with Neelix is the same as Chakotay - the writers simply stopped developing him and he was Flanderized in later seasons. (I don't think he had a good episode between Mortal Coil and Homestead.)

Vaughn's journey so far has been fantastic, and he's obviously still going. Kira, on the other hand, really hasn't developed as much since the start of the novels. And don't get me started on poor Geordi...

That story in Myriad Universes - I'm not sure which one, off the top of my head - made me really, really wish that both Kes and Neelix had made it back to the Alpha Quadrant.

You know, if I was a writer and had to chance to write about a boring/characterwise undeveloped screen character or invent a new one, I'd probably give that new character a bigger screen/page time.

Let's face it. While I'm a big fan of Geordi, Beverly or Harry, they do lack the depth of people like Duffy, Vale, Vaugh etc. Those have much more interesting background.

I wouldn't know what to write about Geordi since there's so little go on (besides being unsecure with women, being best-friends with Data or loving Dr. Brahms). Or Chakotay. He's an Indian alright. But that's about all we ever got to know about him.

On the other hand, I'm very happy that Christopher is writing his new novel with a heavy focus on that sea-girl (that has history with Riker) and I look forward to reading another of his fantastic exploration books.

Shar was in Kira's dream thing about the Ascendants, so he should be back in time to be involved with that.

So I think Shar'll help. But it seemed like he had his own stand, and he made progress, and then it had to go... backwards in a way for him. Poor guy.

It's funny...until the Titan books' excellent use of Tuvok, I think the only time I ever liked Tuvok or Neelix was when they were fused together in "Tuvix," which is either my favourite or second favourite Voyager episode.

But then again, wouldn't that give the writers enough opportunities to *develop* them? To give them those backgrounds?

I'd rather say it's the readers that aren't necessarily keen on suddenly exploring characters that have been around for years, it's not so easy after all to get used to thinking of a certain character as interesting when s/he just was around before. Therefore it's easier to develop new characters instead of turning old, thought of boring characters into "heroes"...

Torres, siting around a monastery moping over her mother.

God, it's been so long since I read those books but I have a vague recollection of skimming those sections and hoping a targ would eat Torres and her fucking brat.

"she is the chosen one!"

"oh she's a targ's dinner...".

Maybe Kirsten Beyer read your mind and that's why KRAD has been cackling.
