Character Development

Let's Pretend You Could Script Seasons 4-7 of TOS. Which of the following characters would you have the most fun developing (and why?): Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhuru, Sulu, Chekov and Scotty.

Uhura and Sulu. They're almost blank slates. A lot of room to run,
I agree. If Kirk, Spock, Bones, and Scotty were incapacitated in some way, I think it'd be pretty interesting to see either of them in command of the Enterprise for an episode or two.

Uhura for sure. Early Sulu was great fun so more of that would have been cool. I would have liked a couple of episodes that actually acknowledged Chapel's qualifications beyond nursing where she could be more active. More nuances in Spock and McCoy's friendship. Obviously some guest appearances for Janice!

Uhura gets to be in charge in the TAS episode "The Lorelei Signal", as the men are incapacitated.

Given the constraints of '60s/early-70s episodic television, I'm guessing the network would ahve nixed any attempts to feature the non-big 3. :-/

A TOS episode like TNG Disaster, where characters are taken outside their comfort zones could have been great fun. McCoy in charge on the bridge, Scotty delivering a baby, Kirk caught with his pants down. Sulu saves the day.

If I could do seasons 4-7 of TOS, I'd want it to be more like the ensemble structure of TNG. Like, an episode that focuses heavily on Scotty working out an engineering problem, or an episode with Uhura trying to decode a cryptic message, that kind of thing. Basically spreading the focus around in different episodes. Which isn't to say I don't love the Trinity (Kirk/Spock/McCoy), because lord knows they're my faves, but in this hypothetical future, why not an episode where Chekov and Sulu get trapped in the newly installed holodeck and have to science their way out of it?

Yeoman Barrows and Helen Noel.

Kor
I know Emily Banks was expecting to be invited back to do more episodes. Is there any official reason why she wasn't? It may just have been that the dodgy executive that assaulted Grace thought it would have looked too suspicious if they fired GLW because the yeoman character wasn't working out and then just replaced her with a different regular actor! Both these actresses were great fun though. I would certainly have liked to see more of them... that it to say seem them more often ;-p

Not to nitpick, but it's 'Uhura'. Anyway, in season 4 I would highlight the exploits of Kirk because, in the words of Captain Murdoch, "He's the top dog. The head cheese. Numero uno."

and the Big Giant Head.

I'd concern myself with big, challenging, dramatic SF ideas for the stories... and while doing that, along the way I'd have us find out a bit more about the second string characters. I wouldn't care who or how. Next Gen made the mistake of making the show more about the characters and their careers and worries and relationships than about solid science fiction, and I wouldn't want TOS to make the same mistake in our fantasy fourth season.
