But it was over the top heavy handed especially in a society that controls even the weather. They died in a fire?Regarding the decision to kill Robert and Rene, I can understand it. It gave Picard a real reason to feel his mortality.
But what about Robert ever gave the impression he'd be anywhere but that house & those vineyards? The dude is as throwback as anyone on the planet can be. I have a hard time picturing him dying anywhere but where his entire life was, on Earth at that estate, in the 24th centuryI agree the circumstances were odd, but we don't know the full story, only that they died in a fire. We don't know if it was in their home, or in another part of the world, or even on a ship in orbit for whatever reason.

What I CAN imagine is the Picards living in a generations old house, that was deliberately kept from modernization by a defiant old curmudgeon, & the whole family paid the price for it, before anyone even knew what was happening way out there in the country
Even 400 years in the past new houses have smoke alarms and carbon dioxide alarms.![]()

Well, that & the fact that the script called for him to suddenly give a crap about having kids of his own, so they had something for him to do in the Nexus, that was at least as consistent as Kirk chopping logs. I could write a dissertation on that stupid nexus actually being Hell, for all that they show the characters doing in thereThey died a noble death. Their deaths provided an emotional backdrop for the main character in a major hollywood script which desperately needed some emotional resonance for a lead actor who demanded "serious character development". Killing off established characters is the easiest way to do that. Robert and Rene's death were blatantly shoehorned in Generations for that effect.
I would've like to see more test of character stories as a commander for Troi; I didn't like the extended chances she had to get the rank. I would to see a similar story where it involves an engineering crisis and this time Troi has to make a tough decision or a creative one, which I would favor, where Geordi is the subject.Say the series continued. Where would you like the characters to continue?
I’d like to see Geordi have a relationship. He was usually too busy saving the day in engineering, but it would have been nice to see him have more of a life beyond that.
