Character Development Season 8

Arpy

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Say the series continued. Where would you like the characters to continue?

I’d like to see Geordi have a relationship. He was usually too busy saving the day in engineering, but it would have been nice to see him have more of a life beyond that.

Others?

Season 8 would show events that lead to Generations. Maybe a DS9 cameo with the Enterprise stopping at the station. Another Q appearance - not our Q, but Lady Q. Sadly, Dr. Selar would have transfered off to be with the Excalibur.
Things between Deanna and Worf don't go like expected. But they split as friends, with Riker taking his chance. Jean-Luc is visited by René aboard Enterprise.

Another thing they never seemed to have time or inclination toward during the series was the Riker/Troi relationship. But I got the impression that the two maybe got together occasionally during the seven years. For one, they wouldn’t get married if they only saw each other on duty and for poker games in-uniform, so there had to be more going on that we didn’t see.

But also in “Violations” we saw the memory of Riker and Troi in their civilian garb sharing a more intimate poker game for two? Maybe they hung out with each other and were intimate between dalliances with others.

Maybe an episode during 8 could have touched on their choosing to pursue each other in earnest. Maybe a decent amount of time after Troi/Worf so that there are no hard feelings there.

Nothing too serielized that would conflict with the episodic nature of the series, but one good episode dealing with that.

(Off-topic, but I also got the impression that Phoebe and Joey were casually having sex during the entire run of Friends, and that was only changed either when they decided to keep Paul Rudd or when they decided to give Joey a spin-off, whichever came first. There were subtly hints to that over the years.)

According to Ron Moore, in Season 8 Troi would have become a school teacher, to give her something to do.

Hopefully season 8 would have been a retreat from the excessive technobabble of seasons 6-7. Likewise, season 8 would have avoided all the family reunion episodes of season 7.

A new female navigator who befriends Data would have worked well.

Mostly all good suggestions.
I guess i don't think like that.
I just never understood why they killed Robert and Rene.
I thought that was just plain dumb.

As far as hook ups the only couple I thought had chemistry was Ro and Riker in the episode where they all forgot who they were.
Kay'lar and Worf wernt too bad either, but she ya know.... Went away.
All the rest, boring limp noodles, Milqtoast, snooze-fest.

Honestly, a hypothetical season 8 should have been all about the crew being promoted or moving on to other things, and then truly ending the series without transitioning to movies. That would have been far, far better than what we actually got.

Regarding the decision to kill Robert and Rene, I can understand it. It gave Picard a real reason to feel his mortality.

But it was over the top heavy handed especially in a society that controls even the weather. They died in a fire?:brickwall:
No fire suppression system
Required in houses?
Even 400 years in the past new houses have smoke alarms and carbon dioxide alarms.

I agree the circumstances were odd, but we don't know the full story, only that they died in a fire. We don't know if it was in their home, or in another part of the world, or even on a ship in orbit for whatever reason.

But what about Robert ever gave the impression he'd be anywhere but that house & those vineyards? The dude is as throwback as anyone on the planet can be. I have a hard time picturing him dying anywhere but where his entire life was, on Earth at that estate, in the 24th century

What I CAN imagine is the Picards living in a generations old house, that was deliberately kept from modernization by a defiant old curmudgeon, & the whole family paid the price for it, before anyone even knew what was happening way out there in the country

But,
I could see his wife who was beautiful and way out of his league,
Convincing him to get some updates.
But as stated above, maybe they were not at home when it happened.
Maybe Robert and Rene were in a cabin in the woods on a duck hunting trip.

I almost wouldn't want to put it in the same season, but the Picard/Beverly thing could also use some progress after "Attached" and in light of their future marriage per "All Good Things..." I think one-episode drop-ins at different stages of their relationships could be interesting, without the need for serialized explorations of every step. Especially if there's an interesting sci-fi or other reason for the peak inside -- again, we only know Riker and Troi had intimate poker games because of Troi's memory of them in "Violations."

Another thing I'd like to see is another "Lower Decks"-like episode. Not even so much for the new characters themselves (although that's fun too), but also because it's interesting to see the command crew through the perspective of the junior officers. I kind of like the idea of Data being very intimidating to a subordinate who knows how good he is at his job.

Regarding the decision to kill Robert and Rene, I can understand it. It gave Picard a real reason to feel his mortality.

They died a noble death. Their deaths provided an emotional backdrop for the main character in a major hollywood script which desperately needed some emotional resonance for a lead actor who demanded "serious character development". Killing off established characters is the easiest way to do that. Robert and Rene's death were blatantly shoehorned in Generations for that effect.

Well, that & the fact that the script called for him to suddenly give a crap about having kids of his own, so they had something for him to do in the Nexus, that was at least as consistent as Kirk chopping logs. I could write a dissertation on that stupid nexus actually being Hell, for all that they show the characters doing in there

The series would have probably still been pretty episodic aside from exploring a relationship between Worf and Troi and maybe Picard and Crusher. It also probably would have had, if movies weren't planned, a mini-arc near the end of Worf and/or Riker or possibly Data deciding to leave the ship. Though I prefer that the show ended as it did without characters leaving their positions.

I would've like to see more test of character stories as a commander for Troi; I didn't like the extended chances she had to get the rank. I would to see a similar story where it involves an engineering crisis and this time Troi has to make a tough decision or a creative one, which I would favor, where Geordi is the subject.

I know I've mentioned this idea in one of the Nemesis threads and my own Borg thread, I would've like to see a dark Data story; where he's having impulses like Lore and what does it mean to his evolution in his positronic matrix?

I would like to have seen one last Picard, Vash story, maybe include Neela Darren in the mix.

What would the two-partner be? Every season has a two-partner dealing with an alien race.

Picard remains in command, though suffers the blow of the death of his brother and nephew, which makes him look at his own mortality as well as his family name and the choices he has made over the years.

Riker is offered command of a brand new Nebula-Class ship in the season opener and accepts, with a heavy heart he must leave behind his home for the last seven years, though he does convince La Forge to come with him as his new "Number One".

Data is promoted to Commander and becomes First Officer. He also has the emotional chip implanted, allowing him to finally experience the sensations Dr Soong intended for him. Though with this comes a sense of loss at Geordi being reassigned.

Troi was one of the officers Riker asked to come with him, but she turns it down to remain on the E-D. When Picard suffers his personal loss, she is there to help him through. She is also instrumental in helping Data come to grips with his new emotions. All whilst her relationship with Worf gets more serious.

Crusher is also on hand to help Picard through his loss, though the fact that they've acknowledged their feelings for one another has put a strain on their relationship.

La Forge debates over whether or not to join Riker, but after being convinced by Data decides to go for it. Before he leaves, he does help Data with the emotion chip, as a parting gift for his friend.

Worf is promoted to lieutenant commander and takes on new responsibilities with the restructure of the command staff. He is also looking to move his relationship with Troi on to something more.

Lieutenant Sonya Gomez returns to the E-D, recommended by La Forge to replace him. As the new Chief Engineering Officer, she is no longer the inexperienced rookie, though still has the foibles of her initial posting to the flagship to overcome, however her talents as an engineer cannot be faulted and she quickly proves herself to be a worthy successor.

Lieutenant (j.g.) Sam Lavelle is appointed the new Operations Manager. A sharp young officer, confident and charming, it comes as no surprise he is compared to Riker. After his promotion to the night shift he has excelled and eager for more, taking it upon himself to do his duty in honour of Sito, a loss that hit him very hard.

Lieutenant (j.g.) T’Shanik is a new addition to the crew, assigned as Chief Flight Control Officer. Cool, calm and logical in a crisis, she is also a highly talented pilot. Working with Lavelle at the forward stations, she has to get used to his very human manner. She was also surprised to encounter an emotional Data, having read all about the Androids former Vulcan manner.
