Chapel & Rand

As for Engineering, it is a department like any other on the ship. Or any ship. The Captain would be well aware of that. There are department heads, and a whole chain of command beneath them. If the top one or two are out, or were killed or incapacitated in a battle or other emergency, you don't have to send 20yo ensigns down from the Navigation department to run engineering. The ships 3rd engineer would take over and everything would continue to run smoothly.

I was thinking about this, and a large part of Kirk's reasoning in-universe was probably that he could brow-beat the 20yo (well, 18, actually) ensign into signing for the torpedoes, whereas an actual experienced engineer would probably raise the same objections that Scotty did.

You mean the cute, pixie haired blonde we saw in a couple of brief shots (one in a close up when Kirk was pleading for the crew of the Enterprise to Marcus?) :) Yes, I would love it if she was Rand.

I think she is s different character though. In the comics based around the JJ Universe Trek's, she goes by a different name, I believe.

If I'm thinking of the right person, you might be referring to Zahra from the comics. (Although, IIRC, her appearance has changed a couple times depending on the issue.)

I wouldn't even mind seeing Janice Lester, as long as she isn't an hysterical, unhinged lunatic. There were a fair amount of TOS era female characters. It is a matter of yes, working them more into the stories. Flesh them out, promote them in rank, show female Captains and first officers, even if they are incidental. At this point I would take a female Captain knocking back a couple with Kirk in an Officers club. Not just enlisted Yeomen and Lieutenants.

By mining the already established TOS and TAS females you already have an inventory of characters to work with. M'Ress, for instance, would look great with modern and big budget make-up and prosthetics.

Don't really see a need.

nuTrek has plenty of background characters of its own.

Agreed. And the only ones that can be given enough time of their own in a two-hour movie is Uhura and (possibly) Marcus.

There should definitely be more enlisted personnel on starships than Star Trek suggests. The show has been horribly top-heavy with lieutenants from the beginning, partly because it focused on the bridge crew and science officers. Presumably all command personnel are officers, all scientists are officers, and a percentage of engineers and security crew are officers. The remaining security guards, engineers, and technicians should be enlisted crew. Of all the Trek characters only Janice Rand and Miles O'Brien are enlisted crewmen of any significance out of about 100 characters and even then O'Brien was retconned to a chief from a lieutenant and Rand's rank went on a roller coaster ride after TMP.

My wish is that the next time there's a Star Trek show, they mention that Earth (and many other Federation planets) have the future planet-bound version of the current day military bases where enlisted personnel are trained, with the same set-up as now (a few months of basic training, then graduation, then training in the specialty that they will be doing on board a starship, starbase, space station, or ground assignment on Earth or their respective home planet, then completing all of it and becoming a crew person on board a starship, starbase, space station, or ground assignment on Earth or their respective home planet.) That would show that there are officers and enlisted crewpeople, rather than just having everybody be an officer.

So film Trek doesn't have smart, beautiful women? :wtf:

it does, uhura,Amanda, Galia and carol are gorgeous. what I meant is that on tv we will have more beautiful and smart female characters who will be explored more and have more back stories.

The films time length is short and to make matters worse. the film is largely based on kirk and spock.so we do not see much from the women.

Most of the women in the collage were one-offs who were hardly explored at all, at least not any more than any of the women in nuTrek--or even old Trek, for that matter.

Gillian, Lily, Anij, Ilia, Valaris all had plenty of depth to them.

Just saw Expendables 3. Maybe the blonde ass kicker in that would be good as an ass kicking Rand..(she could pass as a young buff GLW)

Just read the latest photo-story by John Byrne. I was really excited to see Rand on the cover because I've been enjoying her resurgence in the City on the Edge of Forever comic and I thought they were finally going to feature her in a story to elevate her back up to one of the lead second tier characters.

Alas, she only featured in a back-up story which tells the manner in which she leaves the ship. The story itself is sweet enough but it portrays Rand yet again as a victim instead of a competent crewman. Not only that, while Chekov gets a pass in TWoK to be present on ship even when the character wasn't featured (and hadn't been invented), Rand is definitively dumped off the ship prior to Space Seed (by the presence of McGyvers in the story) in a similar manner to the loss of Chapel in NuTrek.

So thumbs up for Using Rand but thumbs down for using the story to get rid of her! I truly despair...

I think I need to start working on a third TMP photostory and feature Rand in a leading role just to prove she can do it.
