And the thing with poor, poor Seven...![]()
Just a few questions. PLEASE don't flame, I was logical responses.
Other than being easy on my eyes, Beltran was a convincing Indian (Native American) his beliefs were well known and intrigued me. I even took up meditating because of this.
Why all the hate?
Do you dislike Chakotay because you dislike Beltran? (Beltran can be abrasive, but I like him that way, he's honest.)
Do you think he was a bad captain? (IMO, he wasn't right as a leader, until later on in the series)
I think that Beltran is a very good actor and I also think that Chakotay is a great character. In fact. he's my second favorite after Kes.
Unfortunately, he was under-used, especially in the later seasons which I blame the writers for.
I have a theory about the hatred against Beltran. I think that some people dislike him because he had the guts to speak out about what was wrong with the way those in charge did run the series. That hatred spills over to the character Chakotay too.
I wonder why Chakotay was underused?
I think I said before on here that Chakotay's like the butter pecan of Trek characters. He doesn't have the reach-out-and-grab-you appeal of something like New York Superfudge Chunk--it's a more subtle thing with him.
The first couple of seasons, I definitely had a greater appreciation for the character than I do now, as I'm watching season 5.

It's because he's the first officer that it's so weird. We get used to every series having the non-players, the bland ones.. but when the first officer is only a bit more interesting than Travis on ENT that's.. odd. We just expect more.
I think folks who herald RB for "speaking out" should also remember that he wasn't just yammering about things that bugged him about VOY. He also implied that the whole sci-fi genre was beneath him (at least that's how it sounded, even if that wasn't what he meant.) And he said this to sci-fi fans. That's what got everyone's hackles up.
