Chain Eating Joints that serve breakfast....

I love Golden Corral. There's absolutely nothing wrong with steak, shrimp, mashed potatoes, macaroni & cheese, rolls, okra, fish, cookies, carrot cake, and ice cream.

^For breakfast? :wtf: :p

I can't say I've ever heard of Waffle House.

Don't feel bad. I think I've seen all of two in the whole metro area. I've never been in one either.

Perkins is the classic Iowa standby.

Perkins is still around? All the one's out here were converted into Village Inns around 2000. I thought all of them were gone.

I think MajorChord has a great answer, though. I often look for a nice greasy spoon for a nice good greasy breakfast. I grew up eating breakfast on Saturday mornings at the Dixie Lunch in Antigo, WI, and I always look for a similar place when I'm in the mood for a good breakfast. Almost every midwestern town with 2500 people or more will have a similar diner in its downtown.

I also think he has an awesome idea. When I'm out on the road and looking for breakfast, I'll frequently look for a hopping place downtown in some podunk town, or look for wherever the truckers seem to be eating. Both seem to lead me to a good breakfast.

Even discovered that, when they are prepared and served correctly, I love grits. Discovered that by finding an awesome Mom & Pop truck stop on I-10 in the panhandle of Florida. Everywhere I'd tried them out here, they were either runny or burned beyond recognition.

The reason I asked for chain recommendations is because I typically avoid them. I felt like doing something different this time.

I'd say forgo the chains all together. Hit up a small diner or something on your route. Generally anywhere where truck drivers frequent has good food...and I can almost guarantee it will be better than anything from the chains mentioned.

Agreed.

That said, Denny's is the way to go if you insist on going to a chain. The grand-slam breakfasts are hard to beat. Also, if you're going the fast food route (assured to be greasy), it's either Sonic, or Jack-in-the-box (can;t remember which), that offers a breakfast menu all day, and has some pretty good looking stuff on the menu as well.

Used to eat at Denny's a lot in my 20's. Sonic has good breakfast meals, but as for Jack-In-The-Crack :wtf: BLEH

Absolutely. The Sunshine Family Restaurant in Dubuque will always win out over Perkins or Village Inn.

I'm seeing an IHOP and a few Village Inns there in Lincoln. And there's a Lodge Restaurant and a Perkins on 2nd Avenue in Kearney, NE. (Exit 272 on I-80W, which I assume is the route you'll be taking ) I think I'd go for the Perkins.

For sure. I always look at a road trip as an opportunity to get AWAY from the usual, not that I eat at chains. Ever.

When eating on the road, especially breakfast, avoid the chains and eat at truck stops. Really. Spent some time when I was in the Army on TDY trips around the plains states (Kansas, Nebraska, south Dakota) and have never eaten as well or as cheaply as I did in truck stops.

Get yourself a good plate of biscuits and gravy first thing in the morning and you are set.

Ooh, yeah, truck stops are fantastic!

Or if you're in Bettendorff, IA, go to Ross's and order a Magic Mountain!
