Chain Eating Joints that serve breakfast....

So I'm headed out on my first vacation in three years on Friday to attend the National Western Stock Show where I will look at cattle, watch rodeo, and drink beer. I feel like I should start this trip off with a large greasy breakfast from a chain eatery. What is the best for this? There are no Waffle Houses along my route either.

I can't say I've ever heard of Waffle House.

I actually never get pancakes at IHOP, unless they are serving their seasonal pumpkin pancakes, which are amazing. I enjoy their french toast and mostly their eggs and hash browns.

Talking of regional cuisine...I love grits. And I'm from Nebraska. Figure that one out.

(I had 'em for the first time at a Denny's outside Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City)

I'd say forgo the chains all together. Hit up a small diner or something on your route. Generally anywhere where truck drivers frequent has good food...and I can almost guarantee it will be better than anything from the chains mentioned.

That said, Denny's is the way to go if you insist on going to a chain. The grand-slam breakfasts are hard to beat. Also, if you're going the fast food route (assured to be greasy), it's either Sonic, or Jack-in-the-box (can;t remember which), that offers a breakfast menu all day, and has some pretty good looking stuff on the menu as well.

I am all for Perkins for breakfast. Along with Denny's and the Bitchin' Kitchen (That's Country Kitchen, BTW).

I think MajorChord has a great answer, though. I often look for a nice greasy spoon for a nice good greasy breakfast. I grew up eating breakfast on Saturday mornings at the Dixie Lunch in Antigo, WI, and I always look for a similar place when I'm in the mood for a good breakfast. Almost every midwestern town with 2500 people or more will have a similar diner in its downtown.

I like both IHOP and McDonald's, but I definitely agree that a local Greasy Spoon is the way to go. The best breakfasts I've ever had have been in diners or local Mom & Pop joints.
