CGI Star Trek Movie

After watching WALL-E today at my local theatre, I got to thinking, they could make a really good Trek movie with only using CGI. I mean, why not? Star Wars did it with the clone wars, and the CGI is pretty amazing these days, at least when it comes to things other then people or aliens. If they made a TOS CGI movie, I think I'd go see it. If Trek XI is successful, the voices of the new actors could portray the characters or if they really wanted to, they could have some original cast members play their anime counter-parts and the new actors could portray the ones who passed on.

I know people here have brought this up before, but after seeing some CGI films (WALL-E, TMNT) I never realized the CGI was as good as it was.

So what do you think? Should a CGI Star Trek movie be made within time? Or another thing I think would be cool is a CGI animated Star Trek cartoon on Saturday mornings :techman:

I remember watching a scene in "The Incredibles" that showed a tropical island from up above and wondering if it was real or CGI. It was that detailed. That's when I started thinking about the next Trek TV series being in CGI. While not inexpensive to make, it opens up so many possibilities for stories that can include exotic planets, species, and ships plus flashbacks and alternate futures are easily done as well. I would love to see Star Trek: Titan done as a CGI series.

I wouldn't have a problem with a CGI movie at all. As some of the above comments have pointed out, the work they do with CGI these days is amazing. And, I suspect there will be more than a little CGI in the new movie anyway.

T'Cal's comment about Titan is well taken, as it, along with TOS, could then make use of the original actors who may not be quite as young or as, shall we say... thin as they once were?

Beyond CGI, I've thought ever since I saw the movie Titan AE that Trek could be done as a more traditional animated film as well.

I remember when that came out, many critics were calling it the movie that SW:E1 could have been.

There are a lot of ways they could have gone with Trek.

I'm suprised nobody even mentioned the biggest obvious advantage to a fully CGI show... we can finally eradicate the Rubber Forehead Aliens syndrome from the show and showcase actual, recurring ALIEN aliens, which would be a great boon in the types of stories and characters that could be drawn up, not to mention a chance to really experiment with alternative biologies, physiologies, body size, etc... with the results blending seamlessly into the setting and cast instead of an obvious prop like the many attempts at exotic aliens seen in TOS....

I, for one, would certainly like to see it, though not quite yet... while feature film CGI is nearly there in terms of the realism factor, I'm not sure if television CGI is quite there yet in terms of the cost/value ratio... most heavily CGI things I see on TV still smack of cheapness, but I suspect that won't be the case for much longer...

I guess I'm just old and set in my ways, but I have a hard time empathizing with/relating to CGI characters. CGI is fine for effects but still too cartoony, IMHO, for characters. Either the characters have to be very stylized and fake looking or they go for hyperrealism and you get that disconcerting "plastic people" effect. I am not a guy who has trouble with the whole "suspended disbelief" thing, but I find CGI characters very distracting.

That said, I had no trouble with Gollum from LOTR or Yoda in the lesser SW trilogy, but with humans it just doesn't work for me... plus I doubt they could do something like that without a huge budget.
