CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Did you read the feature script? Because I don't think you should say things like that until you do. You might feel silly afterwards. Click!
I don't make a habit out of reading scripts, surprisingly.

Let's just agree to disagree about this matter otherwise I doubt I'll ever hear the end of it and shouldn't have to keep justifying my opinions. Not all Trek fans are going to like all Trek and have different opinions as to what it is and where it is going/should go.

It's not you exactly. I'd guess many of the good folks on this thread feel as if Peters shrunk the fan film universe back about 20 years.
Before I saw Prelude I still thought it was a $10,000 project. Just because you're involved in fan films doesn't mean you have time to follow every development on an unrelated project. Mostly your busy trying to figure out how to make something with next to nothing but an awesome crew, blood sweat and tears. Half of that $10 grand would have gone a long ways. When I saw Prelude for the first time, my remark was 10 grand for this? I was directed to a youtube where Alec at a con in Germany explained how the cost actually ended up $70 grand and latter Alec put the cost at $130 grand which is close to six thousand dollars a minute. I believe many of the Star Trek Fan Film creators here could have taken that six grand and created a much more interesting 22 minute film than Prelude but what did we get? guidelines and limits on creativity.
Giving Peters credit where it's due, he is one hell of a fund raiser and promoter, content creator... not so much.

...After 20 minutes of Prelude I wanted to see more, I wanted the story of the Four Years War...

"... and we Axanar fans realize that we will never have this so long as the management who planned and executed on diverting a million dollars of fan money into a private studio, and never produced anything, is who we look to for delivering an Axanar story in the style of Prelude..."

Seriously I am fine with any Axanar fan who says they liked Prelude. Personally I'm not so much into war stories, but this varies. Where it becomes inconsistent to me is the failure of the above phrase to arise from the followers after they say the first part. Because this is 100% of what happened.

Yes, but how can you make an informed opinion without considering the data? The Axanar script was pretty terrible and would have not been good if it was filmed so its difficult to understand how you reached your conclusion.

To be fair, screenplays are a tough read for a lot of people. And they're often so dry that even good ones can seem terrible if you're not versed in them.

All that said the Axanar feature was objectively terrible. But you can't argue taste. :)

Our annual budget is between $3500 and $5000 dollars. We raise about $2500 to fund a year's worth of productions. Blood, sweat, tears, sodas and chili dogs. That's what real fan films deal with.

Right now, we're designing and constructing a small shuttlecraft for two productions for 2018. I doubt it will be a "hero" version of any Star Trek shuttlecraft we've seen thus far, but it'll be a reasonable facsimile and that'll be fine.

Linda's got the hot dogs and soda ready. :)

Fire up the transporter, I'll be home for Linda's chilli dogs

The script may be complete fanwank, the end product may have been utter shite, but there was something about Prelude that perked my interest. There was a feel and a look to it that felt like proper Trek, a plot and characters that had potential, a blend of TOS and DS9 and just seemed to work for me, all of which is missing from STD.

Did the Axanar production rip the piss with fundraising, yes it did. Did they get a little to big for their britches, you better believe it. Was CBS justified in smacking them down, to an extent (though took it a little too far by tarnishing all other fan films with the same brush). I'm not a die hard Axanarite, I'm just saying that if on level pegging and given the choice over which 'show' I'd prefer to see based on one singular installment from each I know which is my preference. I could very well have found Axanar to be Trek's Phantom Menace but it is a moot point now.

Drat. That's a bit too far to drive, and I don't know anyone down that way to have a reason to go. If you were closer, I'd think about making plans to visit and see your set.

Hmmm....as tight as Randy budgets things, I'd be careful....you might find yourself press-ganged into service! uh...just kidding, Randy! If I ever get to that neighborhood during a shoot I'd be only too happy to offer whatever help I could. Working in deep south heat and humidity can be tough, but it would still be a hoot!

Birmingham is a lot cooler than Albany, but youre quite right: visitors end up holding booms, adjusting lighting, serving as go-fors. :)

What gets me is when people talk about how true to "real" Star Trek Prelude was and then dump on the Kelvin timeline movies. Prelude's action/space battle scenes look nothing like TOS or the first six movies, they look like JJverse.

Meanwhile, Discovery's got me the most excited I've been about Star Trek since DS9 went off the air.

Time to wheel this old thing back out...

Tobias Richter impressively recreates scenes from Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness for $5,000.

I'm not sure of my timeline exactly, but I believe by the time we got to a point where they could have actually started on the Axanar movie, most of the people who made Prelude were gone. So just because Prelude was good, that doesn't mean anything for the movie.
And I don't really understand why it was great when Prelude told a story about a war between the Federation and the Klingons and it was THE BEST THING EVER, but when Discovery did it, it was the worst thing to ever happen to the franchise.
