Wonder if she puts her own spin on things like Alec Peters does.

if you read teh page she does. She makes it sound like a great thing that she beat goliath by making them agree to a settleent on the eve of trial and saving the small star trek producer alec peters.

Survey says: YES!
In 2017, Erin secured a settlement on the eve of trial for a lifelong Star Trek fan, Alec Peters, and his small production company, Axanar, in a lawsuit brought by Paramount Pictures and CBS Studios. Plaintiffs had alleged that a 21-minute “mockumentary” fan film, “Prelude to Axanar,” which was distributed for free on the Internet, and defendants’ plans to produce a longer film, constituted copyright infringement of 50 separate Star Trek works. Plaintiffs claimed rights to countless elements, including the Klingon language and the “pointy ears” of the Vulcan species. The case was heavily covered in the media, including by Bloomberg, The Hollywood Reporter, The Washington Post, Fox and Law360.

See highlighted part above as please, on the 'eve of Trial' (once Alec realized how BADLY their side was doing), they accepted the terms CBS/Paramount had been offering for nearly a year. Oh course:

"Erin talked her idiot client (Alec Peters) into accepting a settlement because he was on the verge of having to pay a ton of monetary damages, and have his financial records detailing misuse of crowdfunds secured for the purpose of making the film which he instead used for his personal (and friends) expenses..."

doesn't sound as good to prospective clients. ;)

She actually may have done her best work as an attorney by keeping him out of jail for embezzlement. If he had kept going it could have gotten really ugly.
Yeah, no. She's a Civil litigation lawyer. There have never been any Criminal charges filed against Axanar Productions and /or Alec Peters. If that had happened, she wouldn't be the one defending him. He'd either take a Public Defender (assuming he cried 'poverty'); or he would have engaged a good Criminal attorney.

Thoughts on the Erin Ranahan article:
She dumped a ton of money (easily $700-800k) into a case that she (most likely with some generous prompting and obfuscation from Alec) thought would end up redefining “fair use”. Then issues started cropping up like Alec's insane financial mismanagement, his proclivity for alienating his former friends, making outrageous claims and doing really stupid stuff, etc.
At some point she knew she had lost - probably when the judge rejected the “fair use” defense - and it was over.
Now she is trying to retroactively justify her complete waste of time.

She is smart enough and determined enough and there is enough ambiguity in copyright law that had she had a client that wasn’t a lying scumbag, she might have made some new case law.

Instead, she ended up with some awkward conversations over dinner with her partners.

Does anyone really believe that AP just gave the patches and other merch away without any plan for compensation???
Huh uh, nope. My well over a year submersed in looking into everything about the defendant's history and personal actions I could locate and the legal matter that this, The Thread, was set up to discuss, as well as all the following actions by the defendant 'after' the settlement supports my conclusion that Shenanigans of some-to-multiple sorts are going on. . . again, and still.

So it sounds like they will sell the Axanar stuff from the newsletter instead of online in an effort to get around the problems with the lawsuit. These people are such scam artists.

All I want to know is how long it will take before my bag of Axanar Coffee is worth big bux on Ebay.

Not very good scam artists, apparently.

Repeatedly going back to the same well once it's dried up is not a sign of a good con man.

"A good con man can leave whenever he wants." -Jack Burton, Chuck

If TAAA* Lord Precious was smart he'd have abandoned this con when the lawsuit was over and moved on to the next one. Hell, if he was smart he'd have abandoned the con and disappeared before he was served.

This is an obvious case of an amateur who believes his own press.

I guess rocketworx and OWC studios were supposed to be the new con, but neither one have done a single thing.

AP spends his time renaming his failed "studio" over and over again while arguing with people online mixed in with hinky fly-by-night quick cash-grabs. Incoming sarcasm - it's what a mature honest adult does, amirite?

He can't even finish the bridge set. Shoot... he can't even take the monitors out of the boxes to put them in the bridge set.
