CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

But what about my attempt at an actual Trek story? Do you think as long as I don't try to make money, and the thread I put it on contains the disclaimers CBS/Paramount wanted for fan films, that the fan photo strip story would be O.K.?
Dude, there's a whole category for Fan Fiction. To my knowledge, the copyright holder has not said "Boo!" about anything anyone has posted here (or on fan-fic-dot-com).

Good example is Galaxy Quest. It was obvious to most people that they were riffing Trek but it was changed more-than-enough to not be infringing on anything so Paramount couldn't complain.
For a time Paramount owned a piece of Dreamworks and then bought them outright around 2005 -06. Shortly after they sold their controlling interest and might still own a piece of whatever name it's parent holding company goes by today . Keeping track of some of these multi billion dollar companies is a nightmare, they are all kissing cousins.
Dreamworks came right out of the gates getting sued for copyright infringement from a star trek convention runner by the name of DreamWerks Production company
How times have changed..

Less well known is Dreamwerks Production Group, Inc., a small Florida company that since 1984 has been in the business of organizing conventions in the Northeast and Midwest, mostly with a Star Trek theme.   At a typical Star Trek convention, Dreamwerks draws customers with a star like DeForest Kelley (Bones), Leonard Nimoy (Spock) or Michael Dorn (Worf from The Next Generation ).   For an admission fee of $25 or so, customers get autographs, meet fellow trekkies, compete in costume contests, listen to pitches for upcoming movies and browse the products of vendors who have rented space at the convention.

I don't think fan fiction posted for free on sites like this have ever been an issue. Now, when people actually turn the stuff into e-books or physical books and start selling it on places like Amazon, then it becomes a problem.

Cool. But I'd guess the copyright holder isn't really aware of them, probably having better things to do, so unless a real abuse is occurring and someone takes time to call the IP owner and tell them, I'm not really worried about that so much as I might run afoul of some BBS rule. But it's good to know. Thanks.

I've published plenty of Star Trek fanzines. They were works of love, like fan films, and money collected for them went to pay the printing and mailing costs. The Internet has practically killed them all off, since a reader can find practically anything they want on-line for free. Our own Classic Trek zines can be found at www.orionpressfanzines.com. Our on-line fiction can be found at: http://www.orionpressfanzines.com/archives.htm

Also this Starship Orville show is clearly designed to riff off of Star Trek (TNG). It's got the snazzy scifi uniforms, aliens, "bridge" command center, teleporting - someone who hasn't seen an episode of star trek since Farpoint could theoretically confuse it with the real thing.

Orion (Or-rye-en)? Hmmm. I actually don't pronounce Orion like that. Well, I suppose there's more than one way. Kirk/Shatner used "o-RYE-en" in TOS, which is the way I pronounce it, but "OR-ee-un" in TAS, IIRC. I sometimes wonder why he changed, but without knowing, I'd just guess he's told how to pronounce certain words and two different people told him two different things at different times.

Just another non-issue. Unlike Solar system, or the star system of Sol and not just any star, which should be a stellar system. But as long as there's loads of people who don't know the difference between a stellar system and a galaxy, I can hardly sweat that one.

Are these the same people who got confused when Enterprise didn't have "Star Trek" in the title? ;)

Well, last I checked no Star Trek show did lazy Papa Smurf and Charlie's Angels references in the first 15 minutes of the pilot (I've read the script), so I think they're pretty distinct.

Hmmm. That's actually how I have always pronounced Orion. I can't say I've heard it any other way, and "o-RYE-en" sounds Irish. And as to "OR-ee-un" .... nope, don't recall it said like that, and it just sounds completely wrong.

Not that I agree with everything said in this clip, but you do hear the pronunciations.

Trek does a lot of Orion based stuff, actually, and I think they're pretty consistent with Oh-Rye-on pronunciation, except in TAS.

Hard as it may be to believe, she was battier in that episode than in a whole other series, which I shall not mention.

What chicanery is LFIM up to these days? Still fleecing people?
He isn't doing much of anything. Allegedly wrote a "first draft" for one of the two fifteen minute episodes he is allowed to make, has been taking random potshots at the Trump admin via social media, doing little daytrips with his GF, and occasionally flaming folks that used to work with him on the Axanar project. He says he is moving to Atlanta in August.
