there is no question I can see where you are coming from with this, but I dont agree, accepting a recast in a fan film vs officially is not the same thing.I think they other major thing the fan productions like NV and Continues did and did well is it made Paramount realize that the fans would accept someone else in the roles of Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Hell, I believe the reason we got Star Trek 2009 and it's two sequels is thanks to James Cawley because he showed people would watch TOS with someone else in the lead role.
I cant speak for anyone but me, but you can over look something dodgy from a fan film, because its made by fans, with love, its obviously meant as a love letter to the series.
The new movies on the other hand, are not a love letter to the series, they maybe good movies but they are not that, I think a big part of the reason why fans can accept Chris Pine as Kirk, is that the movie is set in another timeline, and the rest of the production is also different. Heck they even altered his childhood by killing off his Dad, meaning Kirk in these movies, was never going to be the same as Kirk in the TV series.
If we were talking about a new TV series with a new cast which could be considered a S4 of TOS, then yes I would agree.
edit: Just to be clear the term "love letter" was my choice, I had not see the Trekzone video before writing this post.
