That's quite intriguing. There will be more clarification coming on why he did this? I mean, what impetus would cause someone in or some part of The Business be forthcoming to the public about something like this?Every bit of behind-the-scenes information says Abrams spoke out of turn / prematurely / or to screw with CBS, depending on the source.
There will be more clarification in the weeks ahead. But I'm pretty sure many angry and pointed emails were exchanged at all levels and between multiple parties, including Abrams reps.
Alec has publicly stated that The Sandy Rule prevents them from giving refunds.Have you made a refund request?
Well, yeah, we were ALL like that at some point. I don't think there is anyone who said, "Nope, don't want it" from the get-go.I think the reality is that some fans just saw Prelude to Axanar and thought "I want more of that" and think nothing more of it beyond that.
Seems like Abrams' loyalties are with Paramount and not CBS.That's quite intriguing. There will be more clarification coming on why he did this? I mean, what impetus would cause someone in or some part of The Business be forthcoming to the public about something like this?
Oh, and is Mr. Abrams on the outs with CBS or something? I noticed the 'to screw with CBS'. LOL
Huh. Yeah, sure, I can see that. Ah, which might be known in certain circles, one of which Mr. Abrams may have intersected with to get his info about a settlement in the brew. I had been wondering where he could get that information if, as Mr. Wheeler says, he publicly revealed it on his own, for his own reasons.Okay, well knowing how litigation actually works, it's perfectly possible that there has been an initial agreement over the telephone or in simple correspondence, so I wouldn't just assume it's all just dictated by whether or not something is filed on Monday/tomorrow.
It's entirely possible that the parties have a preliminary agreement that has yet to be formalised.
Well, okay, but, now, what does that sentence mean? The 'as much a commercial endeavor as it is a legal one' part.We do not yet know the full reasons behind the studio wimping out (and I'm not entirely convinced it was just a case of Lin being upset), but litigation is always as much a commercial endeavor as it is a legal one.

I'll be the first one to say that I get info about second or third hand, so even I'm skeptical of what makes it my way. But since so much of what I've heard overlaps in certain spots, I think the safest, most conservative read is that Abrams took the initiative to say something and it caught everyone involved in the case off guard. It seems to have caused lots of stress that the parties weren't expecting.
Had the studios already decided to settle? Did Abrams convince Paramount to settle and leave CBS out in the cold? Did CBS decide to settle and Abrams was working Paramount to agree? Was Abrams a direct party to the negotiations? Was it a decision to settle but nothing had been agreed? Was this a spur-of-the moment thing or had Abrams (and Lin) been working matters for weeks? Is this some kind of payback to CBS for not granting Bad Robot rights to a TV series? I think you'd have to be in the loop to say anything definitely. I'm not.
However, since Peters didn't know this was coming, since their PR guy released a guarded statement, since Paramount didn't have anything more than a three line statement, and since all the other scuttlebutt is complete exasperation behind the scenes, I think it's reasonable to say this was a premature announcement. The Axanar matter isn't wrapped up yet.
It's such soap opera!
I know!!!! I'm just coming down from an unexpected bout of laughter about how so convoluted everything is once I start examining, well, anything. It's such soap opera!
Thats not how i woukd describe it lol
I was trying to avoid "clusterfuck." There are young Tellaritie piglets present. :-)
I wish there was a Love button instead of a like for this. When you make a spoonerism of it, it sounds avian: fustercluck.
And that's my new word of the day. When you make a spoonerism of it, it sounds avian: fustercluck.
"Justin was sort of outraged by this as a longtime fan. We started talking about it and realized this wasn’t an appropriate way to deal with the fans. The fans of Star Trek are part of this world. [Justin] went to the studio and pushed them to stop this lawsuit, and now, within the next few weeks, it will be announced that this is going away and that fans would be able to continue working on their project."
Note it says 'going away' and 'continue working on their project'. Not 'dropped' and 'get to do their whole film'.
That has not been my experience and I have written several Axanar articles for them.Trekmovie is so pro-Axanar, it's actually nauseating.
There comes a point when you have to stop giving people the benefit of the doubt and see them for what they really are. I don't give people nearly as much leeway as The Internet has given The Princes of Axanar.
I subscribe to Scotty's Rule: "Fool me once, shame on you ... "
I enjoy Star Trek fan films. I love the passion of fellow Trekkers having fun. For the most part everyone has played fair staying under CBS/P's radar. AP has definitely loused that up when he crossed the line morphing his "fan film" into a for-profit IP grabbing business.Definitely agree - have made my own (strong) opinions pretty clear by now I think, didn't really want to make another post spinning the same ol' wheel though. In any event, these tools will surely get a just amount of karma from C/P for all this, if not through the legal system now (fines/penalties) then indirectly later on (tainted reputations making it hard to get work etc.)
What's just as important, if not moreso, is what someone else just mentioned a few posts up - the lasting consequences for other fan films/works. If something resembling the status quo, even loosely, ends up being the result - I doubt many people will care what happens to the parties involved, because they can still create/enjoy what they have been creating/enjoyig all this time. If C/P puts tight or otherwise onerous restrictions in place, I doubt you'll hear the end of any anti-axanar vitriol for a while.
I have an overall frustration with Trekmovie in general. When Anthony was running things, I do personally believe the overall quality of reporting was better, even if it grew less frequent over time. That has not been my experience and I have written several Axanar articles for them.
