CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Even if you take 1701News' numbers, which aren't bad, it's still only a fraction of the total Star Trek fandom. Believe it or not, you will find more often than not, Star Trek fans who haven't heard of 1701News, who haven't heard of TrekBBS, who haven't heard of TrekToday, who didn't even know fan-films existed. This is a niche audience within a niche audience.
That is also my own Real Time experience of fans I know.

What if I rolled my eyes at both of them?
BINGO!!!!! In my opinion, neither of those scenes belonged in a show that young kids are likely to watch. Ditto with the Carol Marcus bikini scene.
The scene from Blood and Fire (NV): "OMG Kirk's nephew is gay LOL!" It isn't that Kirk's nephew is gay, it's the way it was handle; felt more like the character was chosen specifically for the shock value of it being Kirk's nephew over having it work more naturally with the story. It was one of those things that hits the brakes on the story when it's brought up during the narrative. It's not the gay angle, it's the poor handling of it that makes it poor.
That's exactly how I felt about it. I didn't care that the kid is gay. And for once making the character gay moved the plot along. Too often I see gay characters that just seem to be inserted randomly just so the author can say "Look how inclusive I am." And funny, but if future society will be so progressive and acceptant, why center the plot around bigotry against LGBT (or racism or religion or anything else)???

As "SeerSGB" said, that scene was there more for the shock value than anything else. Several years ago, a co-worker found the "Hidden Frontiers" series and point me at it. He was one episode ahead in watching it than I was, so after I watched a particular episode he asked me what I thought. I said it was "unexpected" and left it at that. His reply was, "Well, they could have just told me those characters were gay, they didn't have to prove it to me by showing it all in those scenes." At the time, I was one of the few people who knew he was B and moving towards fully G on the LGBT scale. If he found it shocking, it was done for the shock value.

Look, I don't care if there are LGBT characters in a movie. Some of my favorite shows have them. A leading character in "Major Crimes" is gay. Rusty is annoying as *bleep* not because he's gay but because he's a poorly written teenager / twenty-ish kid. NCIS had a character that "came out the closet". To me, it was like, "Oh okay. And moving on with the story ..." Big deal. But as I said, a lot of fan-fiction authors (to include fan-films) have no concept of self-censorship, and it just seems that some in Hollywood are losing that, too. It's not just LGBT themes but also excessive sexual scenes and over-the-top violence. Star Trek is a genre that young kids will likely want to go see.

Back to Haters. Do they really exist?

Yes, I hate Alec Peters. I have known him online since July 2007. I have met him in person in 2009 and 2011. I was admin on his Star Trek Props Costumes and Auctions forum since 2008. I was banned from that forum the day early in 2016 when I said the first negative thing ever about Alec online publicly.

At the same time, if I knew nothing of Alec or Axanar, I would still be on the side of CBS, but it might have taken me longer to get there. I feel most of the Does are innocent parties manipulated into doing things to benefit Alec Peters' long-term plans, when they thought they were exerting those efforts to the advantage and enjoyment of Star Trek fans.

Lyn Wright In case you may wonder why I did not make the hater's list...I blocked Alec the day he knew I hated him. Being familiar with the virtual stoning of the shunned likely to ensue, I chose to put up shields and a cloak. Of course he can read my remarks on TrekBBS and the few other places I might comment now and then. But just to make sure he does know I hate him, someone please screencap and post this. I despise you, Alec Peters.

I blocked him and anyone I knew who was one of his close confidants as soon as I told him what I thought. This was Feb 1 I think. I don't hate him. I despise what ihe has done to fan films but as a person I don't care for what I see but also don't really know him enough to hate him. I save hate for murderers and rapists. It's enough for him to have my disdain.

I was one of his minions for years without realizing it. I have publicly apologized to Star Trek prop and costume collectors for being an enabler for him for too long. He has harnessed the energies and talents and time of far too many people in pursuit of his personal wealth, in the name of Star Trek, BSG, and more.

It was called dialogue

It was exactly what the fans wanted

Perhaps I should learn to write this way

It would be the first pure Star Trek ever created

"It was called the Ares class.

It was exactly what we needed.

We had over a dozen other worlds working on it.

It was the first pure warship that Starfleet had ever built."
