I think, most of us, want to see the people responsible for the big decisions. Whether going to go to battle with a Romulan Warbird or breaking the Prime Directive. We don't want the adventures of Ensign Pimplenose, who has to check in with the ship every five minutes.

Then ya gotta go with the illogical convention that the Capt goes with the landing party.

Which, being a TOS fan, I'm fine with. I don't think Away Teams without the captain, which are logical, are a good idea for a TV series.

How many of them go 3900% over budget though?

to go over budget, you have to actually start. If you're just upping your estimates repeatedly after you signed the contract but before you ever show up, you are a home contractor.

Sort of a Agents of S.T.A.R.F.L.E.E.T?

new season premiere from CBS:
Agents of Advocates Xeroxing All Non Acknowledged Receipts

Can you imagine, however, not being on the away team? I mean, the Enterprise-D had a compliment of what, 1,000-plus souls? But only like five people regularly got to go off ship. That has to suck for the other 995 people who never get to go anywhere.

Maybe they are Trek fans with the extended vacation package, and Q has reason to snark the Captain's seriousness.

Many? He gave us Tribbles, and the first season of TNG. Do you remember the first season of TNG? Or have you tried to repress it like me? :D
David Gerrold was involved during the conception phase of TNG. As I understand it he and GR parted ways prior to the pilot episode being produced (this from a panel I attended in late 1986 where he was talking about his conversations with GR about TNG - but again he didn't stick around to be part of the actual production team. As he described it, his contribution was mainly telling GR "Look a generational ship travelling to another Galaxy and never mentioning Klingons, Vulcans, et. al. isn't going to work for Star Trek fans. If you're going to do it that way, why include 'Star Trek' in the name?"
