CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Well, Alec is at PF Chiangs in Burbank waiting for his costume designer so they can make more Axanar costumes. I'm struck by two things in this update.

What strikes me is "Whatever happens with Axanar (and I remain optimistic)..."

That's a far cry from the "thousands of screaming fans" battle cries and "they done picked on the wrong guy!" tone of a week ago.

It's almost fatalistic. Dismissive. Que sera, sera, right?

I mean, I thought they had this!!!

Also, they're still working to secure representation on the cheap. The other way of saying that is: they have one week to file a response and they don't yet have a lawyer.

The possibility exists that they are pretty much broke and no one is going to take this on pro bono.

I think it's fairly obvious despite what Peters has said in the past, no one's going to take this case pro bono. I think it always has been. He's been rallying the troops, which is very valiant. It could also prove to come back to bite him in the ass. Right now he's the martyr falling on his sword for the "Real Trek fans." The facade is beginning to crack.

I'll be interested to see what happens once there's no more film to protect. Will the Axanerds stay with him? Will they abandon him? Right now, while I do firmly believe Alec has brought this on himself, I do feel a little bad for him.

I don't feel bad for Alec Peters at all.

He has regularly cajoled, attacked, mischaracterized, threatened, insulted, demeaned, and generally annoyed anyone who disagreed with him over the past 4+ years. Just because the CBS chickens are coming home to roost and his whole little vanity project is crumbling around him, it doesn't excuse the utterly shit-tastic behavior he has demonstrated over the years.

Peters brought this all on himself. The legality of it all is icing on the karmic payback he's getting for being a colossal dick to the rest of us.

Warren Jeffs is in federal prison and his followers still think he's a prophet. Alec's followers are just as delusional. Being "part" of Axanar (in the sense of donating money and posting in the Facebook group) makes them feel like they're involved in some greater purpose.

If Alec had any sense he'd quit the movie business and become a TV evangelist.

I'm not sure how pro bono services works in California, but I can't see how Peters and Axanar are even eligible for free legal representation. Isn't there supposed to be a demonstrated financial need or some other forms of hardship? It doesn't even sound ethical for a law firm to extend free legal aid to a client who has the assets to pay.

All about Pro Bono...

You are correct, it typically deals with persons of limited means or charitable, religious, civic, governmental and educational organizations dealing with persons of limited means. They can also provide additional services with a reduced fee for the same meanings. BUT, it can also be in participation for improving the law, the legal system or the legal profession. Not that I can truly see this case have any bearing on that.

Ares Works Captain's Log

CBS/Paramount has discovered our illegal forays across the IP Nuetral Zone into their territory. I've ordered several thought-stopping cliche photon torpedoes and propoganda phaser bursts fired at CBS/Paramount to no effect. So far all of my Corbomite Maneuvers have failed. Our Reputation Warp Engines are damaged beyond repair. The Scapegoat Shield Generator is burned out. Cognitive Dissonance Life Support is operating on Emergency Power.

I feel perfectly justified profitting from Copyright violations and I assure you, all is well. Please send me more money through snail-mail as we burn up entering the atmosphere of the Planet Denial.

End log.

Alec Peters,
Legend in my own mind

I think the whole "pro bono" thing is just Peters stringing his supporters along. It seems they don't have a plan or a clue and instead of just admitting it, they'd rather play on their supporters emotions.

No question.

Because they had another couple of seasons to fill. Forgetting the magic of the week serves no other purpose than that.

But no. Transwarp Beaming and magic blood is the biggest sin the franchise has ever committed because it's supposed to evolve.

It's 'Gilligan's Island' syndrome. IE - You had episodes where the professor nearly built rockets, reactors, et al. BUT, the guy (and the castaways) COULDN'T just fix a 10 foot hole in a boat...:wtf::lol:

Agreed.

Further, having apparently waited this long to acquire legal counsel, I'd think many firms would be unwilling to take the case now, even if he could pay top dollar. With, what is it, five days until the deadline for response, some law firm would have to do a lot of scrambling and put in a lot of hours to get prepared on such short notice. Legal papers aren't fired off like blogs (or bulletin board posts). There's also the retainer money. If I took him as a client, I wouldn't begin work until that check cleared. I'd also want to be sure it came from his personal assets, and not from donated money.

I'd think any law firm that takes his case would probably interview him first to find out how forthcoming and honest he'll be with them. It's a good rule of thumb to never lie to your lawyer and be sure you are trustworthy to him or her, even if as a general rule you aren't that kind of person. He'll have to convince a lawyer he can be that way.

His behavior, at least publicly (on the interweb and such), seems as if he's either in denial of how serious this is, irrational, or self-destructive.

Well, Alec is at PF Chiangs in Burbank waiting for his costume designer so they can make more Axanar costumes. I'm struck by two things in this update.

1) The idiocy of the one Axanerd asking if Peters is still taking donations

2) Later in the comments, Peters posts a photo of his waitress, who looks like a poor deer stuck in headlights, saying "hi" to Axanar fans (according to Peters.

Also: As someone pointed out on the I Stand with CBS page, note how Peters doesn't go out of his way to say he WON'T use Kickstarter money to fund his legal team.
