No wonder CBS came down hard on him. Alec didn't want a fan film, he wanted a media empire, and he wanted to use Star Trek to get him there.
Yes, I notice there is plenty of "imagining" about that. But given that by far the most high-profile thing the Axanar team has done so far (the Prelude film) didn't bring CBS legal down on them, it's a wee bit premature to be theorizing about how they're going to destroy all fan films ever with their latest fundraising perk (or Kickstarter, or whatever).
BigJake?But... but BigJake assured us this wouldn't happen!
Surprised he hasn't yet popped up in this thread.
How come?Surprised he hasn't yet popped up in this thread.
This is a reminder that Alec Peters was long ago banned from TrekBBS--with his three usernames: Linnear, Loken, and Red Omega.

For completeness' sake, here's the original Axanar thread started lo those many years ago, featuring plenty of unhinged and irrational Alec Peters nonsense on full display (as "Loken" and "Linnear" and perhaps by the end even as "Red Omega."
The lunacy on display now is nothing new from this guy; he's never, ever been able to hold himself accountable for anything except unilateral adoration and now the proverbial shit is hitting the fan at warp speed.

I didn't realize Dave Galanter was involved in Axanar. He's a friend, and I sincerely hope he's not one of the unnamed John Doe defendants.

I can't see how I would be. My involvement was to read his first draft AS he was writing it and while the project was still like Star Trek New Voyages (and to be shot with fans/unpaid folks doing the work) on the New Voyages sets.
I gave Alec some suggestions about scenes to cut and dialog I thought was awkward, as a friend, and neither asked for nor received any compensation. I've not even read the script since that first draft stage which was like 3 years ago.
The Doe Defendants include, among others, those persons who aided in the writing of the scripts for the Axanar Works...
Wow, so he truly is an egomaniac. Dear oh dear. How come? This is a reminder that Alec Peters was long ago banned from TrekBBS--with his three usernames: Linnear, Loken, and Red Omega.
The Linnear account was shut down because he inadvertently opened (and used more prolifically) his Loken username. Loken was later banned for, well, search through Loken's posts for a flavor of his behavior (which is no better than his postings throughout Internet-land). Red Onega was banned for being a sock puppet, trying to thwart his ban.
Essentially, he got the same kind of input and criticism that he gets in his Facebook page--without the ability to delete unflattering posts on a whim. I think he found that, ah, frustrating.

But, as I've suggested before, I don't believe the Doe defendants are risk of any monetary judgment. Their presence as placeholder defendants is more likely an effort to discourage people from continuing to work on Axanar.

*shrug* I am not sure one can raise advice of the sort I gave ("why do you have the same info in this scene and that scene?" "Why would someone ask that question?") to the level of helping so much that I'd be a defendant. I do writing workshops at conventions (unpaid ones as well) where I ask writers the same questions as they try to hammer out their stories, too. I never asked for or received any compensation from Alec, nor did I ask for any credit.
And as to the current script, I have no idea what it is or isn't like. The only thing they've produced (Prelude and the one Vulcan scene for Axanar) I've never seen scripts for. I didn't ask to see them, didn't feel I was part of the project (I mean, I'm not a sold scriptwriter, and they had David Gerrold as a consultant--they sure don't need my two cents) other than I have been for lots of friends who wanted advice on something they were writing. (If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me to read something and give them comments and I felt I should, I'd have a nice tidy sum.)
My own two cents: I think fan films can be a lot of fun, but if the IP holders want them not to be made, then that should be the end of it. It's their property, and their rights.

Thing is that one thing I believe about Peters is that he thought what he was doing was legitimate. I don't think he intentionally made fraudulent misrepresentations. I just think that he's one of these people that is so full of himself that he'd convinced himself that he could do what he could and used his self-confidence to convince others - but for some that wasn't enough. Some were smart enough to ask questions anyway.
