CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

What about things like The movie Star Wreck?

Did they get permission to use a lot of Trek stuff, and I think Babylon 5?

Parody is permitted under current copyright law.

See I don't get that. Parody is OK and it's OK to use Ship designs and costumes but if you make something semi serious you are screwed to the wall.

Having said that I do agree. If you are told to stop you should stop or face the consequences.

IIRC - 2 live crew went to court over "Ugly Woman" because it was set to "Pretty Woman" or sounded close to it.

The courts rewrote copyright law to protect parody under the fair-use clause.

Which is good as Weird Al makes his living doing just that.

My first reaction just now when logging in was, "WOW, my account still works!" (the second reaction was "oh my god I've been registered on this site for something like 15 years, oh my god oh my god")

Damn, there's a blast from the past.

Is that Marie Antoinette in the corner back there?

I was thinking Stateroom B on the Titanic.

.

And the band played on... and on...

Not exactly, copyright infringement only accord if say actor/actress is getting pay to play a character by a studio that was created by another studio, that as well goes for the actor/actress that had played say characters themself.

But that's what happened with Renegades....
Renegades was a pitch to CBS, who in turned give the green light for filming to begin, but change their mind after the pilot was shown to them. But that does not goes for the second episode they're working on. They have to follow the rules that anyone that want to make a fan film has to follow.

No. It absolutely was not this. Your warped version of the facts is really, really not helping matters here.

The people producing Renegades used the prospect of pitching their completed film to CBS as a pilot as an incentive/possibility once they finished their first film. Ultimately they had about as much chance of doing so as any other fan film; they just weren't shy about broadcasting their seeming contacts in the industry to do so. CBS gave no "greenlight" to them, and it's highly unlikely anyone in any position to commission a series pilot actually viewed the first Renegades film in its entirety.

Meanwhile, you have loons like this guy...

...and an unhinged man-child more interested in decorating his office at Ares Studios with his toys than anything approaching reason.

Ugh. Just an utter shit-show, from top to bottom and back. Also sad to see Bear McCreary drinking the Kool-Aid there, too. :(

He's going to get his ass handed to him if he keeps it up. I don't doubt CBS is possibly looking at him as a future John Doe.

Again with the "They're AFRAID of ____!" "They fear _____!" This is so stupid. It doesn't work in the political world with using it to decribe candidates and it doesn't work here. Just be humble and contrite for once.

And for god's sake, stop trying to take STC down with you!!!!

When Axanar gets slapped down, I hope he doesn't pursue other fan projects for his sake. He's burned those bridges. As for professional products, I doubt CBS will be looking to him for anything they plan on doing in the future.

I think it's hilarious that they keep touting that they'll do this movie quality thing for far cheaper than a studio, conveniently sidestepping the fact that the reason they can do it so cheap revolves around getting lots of work from people for little to no money, not being a union shop, and a dozen other things. Of course that's cheaper. You think Paramount is gonna get people working on Star Trek Beyond for freebies? Fuck no. These people pat themselves on the back for exploiting the goodwill of fans and people for whom a credit is important enough that they don't expect much or any pay.

Precisely so. The cognitive dissonance at play, and the utter ignorance as well is just plain astonishing. I can accept Peters not knowing any better because he's a bloviating egotist with no practical experience in the biz, but Burnett really should have.

These people are living in an unreality. One guy proclaimed that Axanar is Alec Peters property, and that Star Trek is public domain because CBS abandoned it, which means I imagined the last two movies, and the upcoming movie and series.

Don't forget all of the expanded universe stuff CBS is doing. Books, comics, games, merchandise.

100 pages in. The Bullshit is strong with this one...

You know these guys really are pissing me off now. Stop trying to drag EVERYONE ELSE DOWN WITH YOU!

Not one of them has any legit law experience, no matter what they say or where they went to school. In lawsuit situations you, in the words of nuKirk, shut your mouth!

Gah.

Indeed, and Axanar was pushing their own line of books, games, and merchandise. How on god's green earth can these people not see why Axanar is getting singled out on this one?

I'm over at the official Axanar page, and people are still saying "CBS/Paramount just wants the story for themselves because they know Axanar has shown them up!"

It's a sad delusion they have, and you cannot shake them of it. Believe me, I've tried repeatedly.

I'm starting to see the IStandWithAxanar hashtagging beginning to crop up on other fan production FB pages. These people are determined to fuck it up for everyone.

I really want to read the Axanar script, just to see how the movie would have panned out.
