CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

I hadn't realized Alec finally decided to recast the part of Garth. Did he comment on why?

He did blog some reasoning about it being better for a professional to be in the role. What struck me though, was that this change occurred immediately after the attention of the entertainment industry press came around to the project in a big way, right after the lawsuit if I recall correctly. May be nothing.

He announced it in early January, after the lawsuit was filed and after Tony Todd's claim he wasn't a good actor.

Well, it was at the Axanar shoot of the "Garth is rehabilitated" "Heroes" vignette up at STNV studio this past October that Alec Peters announced to the local production crew that he had decided not to portray "Kelvar Garth" following his completion of the "Heroes" shoot. He had decided to hand over the role to someone else for the Axanar film. If he had anyone in mind in particular, he was mum on the issue.

Wanting to step down from the role predates the December 29, 2015 C/P Complaint.

Thanks for the info, guys. His blog post is sort of revealing: "I won't be playing Garth because casting yourself as the lead is the telltale sign of a vanity project" (paraphrased). So, it was a vanity project at the beginning then, right? Since you cast yourself as Garth? And portrayed him in the only filmed product?

I wonder if it has anything to do with Peters' being such a terrible actor?

It's never not been a vanity project. Even though I was raked across the coals here back in 2014 for daring to call "Prelude" and "Axanar" precisely that, it's always been Peters' vanity project and even Burnett has gone on record repeatedly saying that "Axanar" was to be their "calling card" to the industry to hire them to do more pictures.

He's still stupidly trying to get the thing made and has carried on like he's the next Jerry fucking Bruckheimer for the past four years. Just because he took himself out of the lead role doesn't change the fact that its been his own hubris, greed, stupidity, and yes, vanity that has led him here.

He has no one to blame but his own dipshit self for cocking this all up.

That's pretty weird. If an action is a telltale sign of something, then it is true at all times of the project, not just after years. But ok.

Thanks for that BTS info.

Today in a Twitter exchange with @AxaMonitor, Robert Burnett said the studio they've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on to refit is actually NOT a studio. It's "just a warehouse." They refer to it as a studio in the way an artist calls his workspace a studio. That's a quote. Seriously.

Warning: It's a long Twitter thread, rife with cognitive dissonance.

Yes, I saw that - made my expression change to one of bemusement over a glass of Brandy

The rent is going to gobble up most of what is left of the last Indiegogo fundraiser. They netted an estimated $519,000 from that campaign. The rent plus utilities is roughly $15,000/mth which is $180,000/yr. They have two years left on the lease. $180,000 x 2 = $360,000. So after a couple years paying rent & utilities alone, they would only have about $160,000 to pay for everything else to make a movie - sets, costumes, salaries, craft services, location shooting, convention travel, etc etc.

Oh and paying someone to mail out 10,000 perk packages. Not sure if there is too much enthusiasm for fullfillment right now.

I know and in a podcast Alec said he personally guaranteed the last two years of the lease, that he left the impression donors paid the first year's lease and he would pay the next two years out of his own pocket.

Oh boy. Why do they even engage? They should know to leave well enough alone for their own sake.

Studio, warehouse. To-MA-to. To-MAH-TOE.

well they are playing on the definition:
  1. a room where an artist, photographer, sculptor, etc., works.
    synonyms: workshop, workroom, atelier, workspace
    "the artist's studio"
  2. a film or television production company.
So if I put up lighting grids and green screens and allocate space to build sets and make permanent production offices and raise funds SAYING I am making a "studio" for my incorporated production company to film this production and others in the future and to get into the whole pipeline business of pay per view SF, isn't this indicative of which definition pertains?

Once again its the misdirection game... its the FILM PRODUCTION BUSINESS WITH PERMANENT FILMING AND ADMINISTRATIVE FACILITIES BEING PRESENT that makes the building use definition (2) of "studio". But lets define it instead by saying its just a warehouse and the activities are just those of a lone artist's workspace (misdirect: pay no attention to the elephant behind the curtain). I'm sure this will spoof a lot of people in the studio business district where they just had to locate.
