CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Do you really think the law firm pays attention to that minutae? Shit, did I spell that wrong?

I have seen attorneys care about every word that could go public on a case, but sure, I could see that too. I guess what's going to be heard at the moment is their filing.

Well then...

I have not weighed in on this Thread, because I had not actually seen the "Prelude to Axanar" SuperTrailer(?), whatever we are calling it. So many videos are blocked, here.

Now I have.

And, I have a strong opinion as to why CBS/Paramount is suing.

Say what you want about how far C/P is/was willing to go, in terms of what the definition of a "Fan Film" is. IMHO, when they saw this, it was immediately obvious to them that this was no "Fan Film". Even for a "spec" piece, or whatever "Prelude..." is considered to be, the quality and "finish" (yes, there are still flaws) goes past what C/P would be inclined to benignly ignore. Certainly, it is also immediately obvious the extent to which the Axanarians infringed...the look, feel, music, ships, insignias, all of it, yes, Infringe City! But I think C/P looked at the overall product and realized that, if the entire movie was made and released, it would be much more than a "Fan Film".

what with software that can reproduce classical composers by analyzing their corpus, and ever higher quality of cgi and ai-assisted characters, essentially all the tools required to make a passable knockoff of any 'world' quickly, one has to wonder how storytelling will evolve as a full time profession. musicians seem to have shifted to making money from live touring rather than recordings.

I think there's a definite disconnect between what's presented to the crowds at large and what's actually known and/or accepted as fact within the 'inner circle' so to speak. I think the moment donors started asking questions and the moment Alec et al. started 'evasive maneuvers' was where the line got drawn in the sand. Alec & co. coming clean to the critics would've handed more ammo to C/P if not sealed their fates altogether. If the right conditions existed (which I doubt they did, or will.....), they could've settled the matter quietly & privately with C/P, before coming clean to the donors and trying to smooth things over however they could. Here though, there's a matter of pride/ego to consider - a big stumbling block for certain people as we've all seen (as I'm sure one or two of them would want to try and save face somehow).

To me, in a larger, overall context.........Axanar seems like one huge masturbatory exercise (if you'll excuse the expression) - the combination of ego/pride & money turning another fan-backed effort (in the same vein as New Voyages etc) into something much different. Almost like the 'Genesis Device'........

Well said. Pair that with the seemingly endless amount of money that Axanar was able to leverage from a hungry fan base - CBS finally was forced to address the issue in a public and punitive way.

If anything has become clear to me, it seems like Alec and his legal team may have broadly different definitions of "victory".

Axanar's lawyers may see "victory" as a settlement with relative low civil damages, whereas Alec seems to see "victory" as getting to still make the movie he wants to make, no matter what happens.

That could just be a show for the people who still support the project. The studio space is what's really valuable here and I think the real goal is to protect it. After all, the studio has the potential to become a commercially viable business independent of donors.

Thank you...I am glad I saw it, and glad to be more informed, now, of the issue(s)! It will be very interesting to see how this all unfolds...the law is the law, but the "clip" was pretty darned good, IMO.

...agreed! The future of "Image Storytelling" could be well-storied, indeed!

Axanar raised money using CBS IP - and that money was NOT only going to Axanar - it was going to production facilities that would be used for other ventures. I think that is the problem.

TONY TODD: "SOMETHING'S NOT RIGHT" with Axanar.
In an interview on the MORTIS podcast, the former Axanar actor says production delays and loss of director Christian Gosset were among the reasons he left. And he's on the short list for the new Star Trek series. http://bit.ly/axatodd
If Tony Todd makes it onto the new Trek series, that would be awesome. I love the man, and he brings real power to any character he plays.
