CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

I remember vaguely AP stating that, contrary to TTI, Axanar would be completed.

And here we are today...

Oh, perhaps you mean this gem of a passage?

Happy your shoot went well John. Excited to see the final product. This is truly a remarkable effort.

I can't help the irony that this 30 year old fan film is going to get finished and released before Exeter. You should be commended for your efforts John!

Exactly! Thanks, Karzak, for finding this "Gem"! But turns out, I was wrong, too...

Yup. And while Peters has brought this on himself, I just don't think he has an idea of how bad this really could be for him. I mean, I have no love for the guy, but at the same time, I hate to see anyone trampled like he's going to be.

I hope that he gets crushed so badly that he won't have a clean pair of underwear left with which to wear to make any films at all.

Monday, January 4th, 2016 Well, today was the first full day back and much was dealing with lawyers. One of the things all the arm chair lawyers on Facebook don't seem to get, is that a legal case is much more than what is in the complaint. People were all claiming they knew why CBS was suing Axanar.
We were too big!
We were making to much money!
We were paying crazy salaries to employees!
We are too good and Paramount is scared!
I could go on. But the point is no one knows and no one bothered to read the complaint, which says none of that.
We won't be commenting much on the legal case as we are in discussions to settle the situation. What I can say is that all those arm chair lawyers have absolutely no clue what is going on in those discussions. And no clue what CBS and Paramount thinks.
We hope to amicably resolve the situation in a way that benefits CBS, Paramount, Axanar and all fan films.

Tell it to the judge.

Seriously.

IKR. Well, I did read the complaint. So did half the people here.

[Note: this is from a thread about Yorktown: A Time to Heal, a fan film which is still, today, nearly a year from it's completion and release as detailed by its producer.... which would put it out more than two years after Starship Exeter's "The Tressaurian Intersection" finally came out.]
And how many years ago was that post?

Do you mean over on Facebook?

Yea... I feel like I am talking to my 5 year old...

"When you take something that isn't yours that's called stealing"

"I don't care, I wanna play with it"

loofa.......

My 3-year old and 1 year old are encouraged to share, and that there's no problem with the 1YO playing with the 3YOs toys as long as long as the 3YO isn't stopped from using it (and vice versa)

I guess that's not the american way though.

You own the toys and decide who plays with them, just like with CBS and the BBC, by the way.

Anyone notice on their "fiscal report" that the salaries line item is a bit above $48,000, yet the actual salaries add up to $73,000+?

I didn't bother to do the math, until someone mentioned that on the BBS..... so basically they paid out over 100K in salaries

Anyway, the Salaries section makes no sense. The formatting is FUBARed and you can't really tell what number belongs to whom. But when you add up all the numbers

Salaries
$17,420.00
$38,166.57
$5,000.00
$9,800.00
$48,042.31
$118,428.88
1099-------------------$17,420.00
Alec Peters-------------$38,166.57
Diana Kingsbury ------Deferred
Robert Burnett----------$5,000.00
Curtis Laseter-----------$9,800.00
Misc. Salaries-----------$48,042.31
Total==========$118,428.88

Just over two years ago, from Dec. 13, 2013.

There is a difference between sharing of your toys and taking toys that are not yours to take...

So it's paramount who are acting like the toddlers by refusing to share?

CBS and Paramount have thus far been willing to share... This is the first time, where they have "Taken back" their toys so to speak....

So something is different with Axanar... What is it? I suspect that it's in the Annual Report... because that was released 2 weeks before the suit was filed... I could be mistaken... I don't know CBS or Paramount's legal team strategy... it just seems too coincidental for me...

So Which is it Alec? Is the Complaint relevant or not? because you seem to be contradicting yourself here...

CBS and Paramount have "shared" with many, many fan films over the years.

They're objecting, here, to theft for profit. The people behind the project may simply have been confused or misguided, but that doesn't mean that it's in anyone's interest to tolerate what they're doing here.

Tell it to the judge.

Seriously.

They filed a lawsuit and asked for an injunction now I don't think you have to Perry Mason to work out in broad terms what CBS is thinking...

I was just about to post something very similar. This isn't rocket science. The writing is on the wall.

And chances are, it will settle out of court. Regardless if any money changes hands, the likelihood of Axanar proceeding as is is nil.

He really thinks that none of the folks with legal experience who are commenting have read the complaint?

He really is living in his own little world.

Y'know, these vocal Axanar defenders are starting to remind me of a certain group in the American political landscape.

Consider: we have a group of angry people: predominantly white, male, and middle-aged. They're passionately devoted to a thing to the point where they feel a certain ownership of it, and they're mad because the people who control that thing aren't managing things in a way they agree with. They fervently believe that, were the founder of this thing still alive, he would completely agree with them. They feel like the people in charge have abandoned the founder's original intentions, and that it's incumbent upon them to take this thing back so that the founder's original intention for it can be restored and things can be like they were in the good old days.

It's so obvious: Axanar fandom is the Star Trek Tea Party. I'm not getting political here and saying that the Tea Party is good or bad, just pointing out that if you swap out a few proper nouns ("George Washington" for "Gene Roddenberry", "America" or "the Constitution" for "Star Trek") a lot of the arguments they make and the way they make them are practically identical.

Well, today was the first full day back and much was dealing with lawyers.
We won't be commenting much on the legal case as we are in discussions to settle the situation...We hope to amicably resolve the situation...

That Axanar update rather disingenuously suggests that they're negotiating with people at CBS without actually saying anything of the kind.
