CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

This whole thing would be fucking hilarious if his actions here weren't putting every single other fan production besides his in jeopardy.

DING! I have to believe that a good chunk of why CBS/Paramount went after Axanar and not other fan films is because they've been thumbing their noses at the studios for some time now, to say nothing of the second money beg which clearly wasn't for their own startup studio.

Pretty much all the other fan productions I can think of have been pretty respectful of CBS/Paramount.

We can't, cause it ain't public!

<mic drop>

Todd could evidently read the script (I assume not making huge generalisations here, and Todd dyslexic)

That's exactly right... He and Burnette are taking a burn the place down mentality....

Glad I'm not the only one that sees it that way. My take is hey know they're fucked, so they're going to try to take as many productions as they can down with them. It's petty bullshit.

Welcome to any kind of dealings with Alec Peters.

“The Axanar works infringe plaintiffs’ works by using innumerable copyrighted elements of Star Trek, including its settings, characters, species, and themes,” the suit states. “The Axanar works are intended to be professional-quality productions that, by defendants’ own admission, unabashedly take Paramount’s and CBS’s intellectual property and aim to ‘look and feel like a true Star Trek movie.’ On information and belief, defendants have raised over $1 million so far to produce these works, including building out a studio and hiring actors, set designers, and costume designers. The Axanar works are substantially similar to, and unauthorized derivative works of, plaintiffs’ Star Trek television series and movies, in contravention of the copyright laws of the United States.”

“We’re doing what other fan films have done for 30 years,” Alec Peters, the producer of the Axanar films, told Deadline. “Maybe CBS feels threatened by the quality of what we’re doing.”

I smell another Kickstarter!!!

Peters, a named defendant in the suit, declined to comment on the specifics of the suit, but said, “We plan to fully defend it.” He said the feature film will start shooting in February.

:guffaw:

I smell things getting ugly between now and February. I'm no legal expert but surely this will be Alec and Robert digging themselves deeper into the mud?

I don't think you're even close to being the only one who sees it that way. The extent of the flame throwing at the surrounding bridges is astounding.

I said this over the Facebook post and every member should repeat. Stop bring in other fanfilms in, they have nothing to do with it. Also everyone should be asking the production team what the issue are. Full details. There something more going on here and this fanfilm should not effect the others unless we know all the facts. Alec has been has not be going into details.

I'm not sure I see it that way, but I do think it's hilarious that he's citing all of these other fan films after spending so much time going out of his way to make it seem like Axanar is a cut above all the other fanfilms by calling it "professionally made", implying that everything else is amateur hour.

Yep, I have a bad feeling about the end result of all of this. A lot of good people who love Star Trek are going to be caught in the cross-fire.

Peters made no bones about shitting on Renegades whenever he could get away with it. Under his username here "RedOmega" he did so repeatedly, as well as under her other usernames "Loken" and "Linnear" in the comments sections of articles on other sites. This turnaround now from Burnett, who professes to be a diehard fan, now having his temper tantrum because CBS is taking its toys home now, is just sauce for the goose.

Wait, Peters was RedOmega?! Oh, man, that's *hilarious*. Had no idea. When did he get run off?

And I'm also  hard at Burnett trying to bring his TNG Blu-Ray documentaries into this. Uh, dude, you were commissioned by CBS to make those and you got paid for them. Exactly the opposite of what you're supposedly trying to do here.

The way Peters and Burnett are acting, it reminds me of my two boys. When one gets caught acting a idiot, he automatically tries to drag his brother into it with "But dad, he was...."

OT, but what I find somewhat funny is that over in the Deep Space Nine subforum, Burnett is frequently cited as the sole source for the “official CBS statement” that TNG on blu-ray failed to meet expectations and tanked. Yeah, seems like a source I would trust.

Sorry if this opinion was already posted, but it took them long enough to file a suit.

So long that I think they're only doing it due to the success and popularity of Axanar. Lots of other fan productions out there, but Axanar is top quality. Better than some actual Paramount productions.
