CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Agreed. You let folks finish something--then sue. It is a nice set.

I think CBS and Paramount would be waiting for quite some time in that case. If finishing Axanar in a timely (and financially responsible) fashion had been a priority, the Axanar Productions team would have leased studio space instead of trying to convert a warehouse into a functioning studio.

This.

I get he was trying to set up a for profit studio...but get the product out first...then do whatever it is you are going to do.

I've only just read the blog post about Ares Digital 2.00 being up and running and, wow, there really is no mention of sending out the products people have already paid for. They can get their digital perks or buy more things but the stuff that's already been paid for is not referred to at all. I think they're keeping those patches etc to send out this time (maybe) so they're effectively selling stuff that they've already sold.

I'm amazed by this. The word 'shameless' doesn't cover it. Just to reiterate, because I'm that stunned, people gave them money some time ago in the belief that they would be receiving patches but they're withholding them to send out to people who give them money today.

Is that right or have I read it wrong/missed something? I'm basing much of this on that image that was posted on the blog showing some shelving overloaded with what we were told were undelivered patches.

I could see where sending out patches to many thousands of people who have more or less given up or think the lawsuit has merit might bring a lot of simmering donors back into the fray and provoke a lot of ironic thank yous

I doubt Axanar folks intend to resell things, that seems awfully coarse, but they might want to do something strategic like catching up with the old donors gradually rather than all at once, i.e. deemphasize it a bit. Don't make it the top of the first PR announcement, require people to recertify their data, show on their online site an 'oh by the way' after the site has been running for a bit, saying 'in case anyone doesn't know, you can get your patches by recertifying your snail mail'.

Big question would be if they did a mass mailing about the site and about getting the old stuff by recertifying addresses. Did they? I mean, they *can* mass mail to their donors, they just did it for Propworx...

I'm all on a tear today because a new Axanar podcast dropped over at Trek/fm, in which they bash Discovery etc etc

I was just getting over my anger that this network fired the Women at Warp podcast for questionable reasons (short version: they had a podcast that criticized Shatner over some odd and arguably sexist comments at a convention in Montreal, which may have been taken out of context, and while The Mary Sue stood by similar criticism when the blowback came, Trek.fm caved under the actor's wrath and deleted a great and incisive show, though it still runs independently), but my anger has reignited because despite all that, the network continues to legitimize these con artists, while booting people who actually love Star Trek.

I do wonder what the hold is that Alec has on some of these guys? They are really eager to drop their metaphorical pants for him.

I have to wonder if some of the musical chairs going on over there right now is related to this or the Women At Warp business. Probably not, but the timing made me wonder. Which is too bad, because they do offer some of the finest Trek podcasting to date.

Reading the synopsis of the podcast episode (emphasis mine):
Star Trek fans eagerly awaited the release of the newest film with a mix of excitement and concern. After such widespread disappointment surrounded Into Darkness, how would the franchise be honored and portrayed in the year of its fiftieth anniversary? An initial trailer featuring music by The Beastie Boys was met with much hostility, and a few plot leaks created controversy in the fan community.

In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, Alec Peters sits down with David Gerrold, author of the classic episodes "The Trouble With Tribbles" and "The Cloud Minders," to talk about their opinions ofStar Trek Beyond, the revelation about Sulu's sexuality, and how the character stories changed between the TV show and the movies. They discuss upcoming show, Star Trek: Discovery, and how they feel Star Trek films should have smaller budgets.

Plus, in news, Alec and Rob talk about Beyond and Discovery, and point out a few of their nitpicks about the movie.

Two blowhards give their opinion of BEYOND — pass.

STAR TREK films should have smaller budgets — what BS! STAR TREK is a blockbuster franchise now, something it's always been trying to be. When TREK had smaller budgets, Trekkies complained that it needed more money. What's this notion that Trek has to be cheap to work that these people seem to hang on to. So again — pass.

One of the blowhards talks to another blowhard about BEYOND and DISCOVER — pass.

In other words, a has-been blowhard and two other blowhards have a conversation to demonstrate how out of touch they are. Big pass.

Alec wants Trek to have a smaller budget so there is a better chance he can bilk some Trek fans for something that looks sorta kind of like it...

They did two mass mails the same day to the same list of donors: One branded Axanar to induce them to update their shipping addresses and other personal information, and the other branded Propworx to induce them to do business with that separate, third party company.

Also, the undelivered patches from the second Kickstarter campaign remain undelivered because Axanar's software couldn't handle the fulfillment.

In the meantime, they have fulfilled new orders placed in the donor store because, of course, that represents new income unburdened by any kind of accountability; the patches represent a lingering obligation for money spent long ago. I detail the situation here.

I would assume their new site tries to fulfill all outstanding perks? It wouldn't make sense for it to omit any.
And if they emailed everyone, I would hope that would include all the email addresses they received from the donor platforms. If they told everyone you can have your undelivered perks now just log in and verify your shipping info, then I couldn't find any fault with that... aside from the years gone by in an epic campaign to defeat Sauron the junior high school extra credit mailing list project. Am I missing something about their current efforts?

Which is at the core of everything they do - it all circles back to that.... "We can do it cheaper, and better - give us the money."

Translation: we will take a discount for a little while to get control of a market, but you bet we will make the price just as high when we are in control. And to hell with any IP violators who try to steal it from us with arguments they can do it better and cheaper, we will sue their pants off.
