CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

The Battle of Randanar. Where libertarians go to loosen up.

Rand's first major novel The Fountainhead is basically a story about IP theft. By the reasoning of that book, C/P has the right to simply blow up AP's studio without even going to court first.

A potential sale of Paramount Pictures could make Viacom a target

By Trey Williams, MarketWatch

Viacom was interested in selling a minority stake in Paramount Pictures to China's Wanda Group

Viacom Inc. may have a target on its back now that the media and entertainment company has effectively ended a monthslong struggle for control, with a settlement that will push Chief Executive Philippe Dauman out the door.

Dauman had hoped to sell a minority stake in the Viacom's (VIA) (VIA) floundering film studio, Paramount Pictures, a move opposed by Sumner Redstone, who owns nearly 80% of Viacom through his holding company National Amusements. The Wall Street Journal (http://www.marketwatch.com/story/vi...paramount-pictures-to-chinas-wanda-2016-07-13) reported in July Dauman had drawn interest from China's Dalian Wanda Group Co. for a 49% stake in Paramount.

As part of the settlement, Dauman will have a chance to make his case for selling a stake in Paramount. However, Viacom as a whole may be an attractive acquisition target, suggests BTIG analyst Rich Greenfield.

"While Dauman and the team wanted to sell 49% of Paramount, Wanda wanted it all. If Wanda or others really want Paramount, they should seriously consider buying all of Paramount and then look to sell off what they no longer want," Greenfield wrote in a blog post.

Viacom's enterprise value is a little more than $29 billion, according to FactSet, and Greenfield's belief is that Wanda would have been interested in shelling out $10 billion for all of Paramount. If interested in studio, the time to make a move is now, according to Greenfield.

"Management and its board are in upheaval, with majority shareholder, National Amusements focused on maximizing value for shareholders. What better time than right now for a company to make a run at Viacom." he wrote. "If they wait, it may become far more difficult to obtain Paramount. Not to mention, if Viacom is able to improve its operations, an acquisition of all or part of the company could be far more costly than at today's levels."

This could work to his advantage, even if he's wiped out in the short term, if he would just focus on flying straight and level with other people's business interests and dignity. Add comedy rimshot, or not, its really his choice. Wonder if he will ever wake up to this.

You don't really see that happening, do you?

Another great exchange on IMDB:

Well that's what you tell me to do (without incentive, by the way). But what do you think of how those ridiculous "guidelines" have negatively affected all of these quite numerous other projects, "Sargent"?
http://axamonitor.com/doku.php?id=guidelines_aftermath

Looks just like CBS / Paramount refuse to play by the rules that are fair and beneficial for all parties concerned, while making threats to enforce the stupidest, most cockeyed "guidelines" that no one can, nor should, follow.

Well they're just a bunch of wacko, dysfunctional, greedy, and stupid control-freak pencilnecks, aren't they. Funny how they fail quality-control allthewhile themselves, but not exactly surprising.

Maybe it's time for real, intelligent, and quality Star Trek to ALSO abandon proper rules when dealing with those pussy suit bastards.

CBS should get (yet another) black-eye, and Paramount should be mined into a negligible pile of dust, unless someone has a worse, um, better idea about how those scrawny wieners should be dealt with, in as much as they are anymore dealt with at all.

Now what are you going to try to tell me about that, "Sargent", hm...?

Oh, on an aside:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you mean the CBS exec, Mr. van Citters, is a control-freak, I have to disagree. His job is to protect the IP
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Protect"? ??? What a *beep*ing pussy! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA LMFAO! "Protect" from what? From his getting it all wet with him in the bed that he wets!? AAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! What a urine-soaked lard-assed dilettante! Does he want us to believe him to be serious!? What a vastly over-paid cum-guzzler
Oh, yes, you can quote me on that.

First, it's spelled Sergeant, and three's no reason to put quotes around it. I may be retired now, but I earned the rank and title of Master Sergeant.

I suggested you not hold your breath waiting for Axanar to be made because it seriously looks like this case will not be settled and thus will go to trial next year. Even if Axanar pulls off a miracle and gets the court to allow the film to be made, they still need to start from scratch as they have no cast or crew to speak of.

What do I think of the CBS rules? On the whole, I think they're okay. Going one-by-one, I would like to dial a couple of them back. For example, I'd like them to change the 15-minute limit to a half-hour. And some of them need to be reworded based on public comments from Mr. John van Citters, such as the rule about uniforms and props. The rule, he explained, is to stop sales of counterfeits and NOT intended to keep people from making their own stuff (not for sale).

CBS is not making any threats over the guidelines. They said, "If you follow this list, you're safe." They never said that if you violate just one of the rules, they'll come down on you like a ton of bricks. Indeed, Mr. van Citters flatly stated they probably won't care if you break half of them. Some rules, they DO care about, such as buying counterfeit props/uniforms, selling unlicensed merchandise, or making personal financial gain based on the Trek IP. And those are the same rules every IP-owner enforces, the same rules that every fan-film to date have followed, and two of the rules that Axanar broke and got sued over.

I didn't want to provoke him further by saying so in my post on IMDB, but it appears that "Strangerhand" is almost as unbalanced as Lord Garth of Izar.

I doubt it, by some of the things he still puts out it appears he thinks he's doing good.
In there winning, doing it for the fans and all fan films.
