"The best thing that CBS could do (which would require some changes in the legal department) would be to cut a deal with the movie's producers to let them do their movie, dismiss the lawsuit and then stream the movie on the new CBS portal. In fact, establish a fan portal at CBS where all fan movies and shows can be showcased. Make CBS THE PLACE to go for Star Trek, official and fan. You could add trailers to other CBS shows as a bonus and get great optics to a loyal fan base. Show the fans you love them. Let people make good content for no cost to CBS and generate excitement for Star Trek. This is the profitable solution - it gives the fans an outlet, puts more Star Trek content out there (content CBS does not want to make) and does not piss off the base. "

The delusion is strong in this one.
If a delusional fan is stalking you, don't get a restraining order. Invite them in to your home. Show the psychopath that you love him. Give him free rein to rummage through your stuff. It'll be great PR for your career. And as a bonus, it will encourage other psychopaths to start stalking you in the future.

I keep a few extra locks of my hair set aside for this very reason.

I stopped reading the executive about midway. Did he ever make a logical point?
No. It was basically "Axanar is awesome and CBS sucks and CBS would make a billiontrillion dollars if they just let Axanar do whatever they wanted and then paid them and fans are amazing and CBS should let them steal whatever they want."

Cut to 1850s, California, Axahats with their leader arrive at the gold rush:

"The best thing that Sutter's Mill could do (which would require some inconsequential changes in the the legalities of ownership) would be to cut a deal with their claim jumpers to let those thieves sell their takings, dismiss the posse and then offer to handle the thieves' finances for them. In fact, establish a bank at the Mill where all claim jumpers can be serviced. Make Sutter's Mill THE PLACE to go for finding gold, owner and jumper. You could add maps to other mines as a bonus and get great optics to a loyal criminal element. Show the outlaws you love them. Let people make good profit for no cost to the Mill and generate excitement for the gold rush. This is the profitable solution - it gives the bandits an outlet, puts more of the owners' content out there (content the owners of Sutter's Mill does not want to claim) and does not piss off the Johnny come latelys. "

Well I agree with one thing at least: the fans are amazing... but no one should be allowed to do whatever they want. Respect the sandbox people!

Though LFIM has been pretty sloppy throughout this whole sordid mess, I'm kind of amazed he didn't/doesn't have some kind of backup plan/escape route. With as narcissistic as he is, I would think he'd still be able to recognize when to cut and run.

He raised some money, made an attempt at film production but failed. Despite that, he quite literally established himself as Lord over a small sub-set of fandom which, to any reasonable person, should be enough to satisfy his ego.

Like Picard said.........

"There's no logic in this at all! Whether they succeed or not.....Lord Alec and Axanar will be destroyed....."

I'm writing this post from the Delta Rewards Lounge at LAX. I wanted to give detailed thoughts on the IMDB post, but right now I'm closing a merger between FOX and a Firefly fan production. Advertisements to follow during the new season of "Bones."

When your executive assistant has finished getting you coffee, perhaps you'd like to listen to a brief pitch from Richard Hatch at Comicon. He'd like you to consider a win-win situation where talented fans can also make your properties in a profit-sharing relationship... and he would love to do BSG:

This clip confirms the root issue I raised many pages ago. New media tech has been discovered by the amateur masses and some of them perceive it as a chance to make a run at established revenue channels in the world rather than making their own content. They literally want to be made a gift of some of the profit, because they say they are fans of the product.

If the IP holders do not shut the door hard on these pirates, before you know it there will be a hundred of pirate studios all over the world trying to pull the same thing on every profitable entertainment property in every country, all using the same reasoning and the same "fans fund the business costs" model.

There is absolutely no room for letting them pull off this heist beyond the generous guidelines established. The studios better level Axanar, or they will be facing a Hydra of competitors posing as fans.

C/P should level Axanar, yes. I'd venture to say that Alec's brand of arrogance/meglomania is unique to him only though (that being what distinguishes this case from everything else IMO). If all this hasn't completely dissuaded every last industrious fan out there, then I'm sure the few who'd dare to follow the path you described, would tuck tail and run at the first sign of a C&D letter.

It isn't fan-style efforts I am thinking of. It is business level dark hacking operations that do things like sell 10k likes on Twitter, or build and resell game characters, or launch DDOS attacks. A class of operations exploiting revenue opportunity in the online sector. Amoral, not fannish wrt/laws and owner interests. Ready to grab every penny.

If there is real money to be made off of (for the sake of argument) US media properties, and any grey space within which to operate, aggressive purely profit oriented operations will move in based all over the world. They'll call themselves fans at the very surface but they will be completely focused on conning fans out of startup money (some quitting right there) while others go on to make and distribute knockoffs of tv shows, movies, etc anything cherrypickable for quick profit online. Fan alternate timelines. Fan 'side stories'. Fan movies years before the property itself was planning to get there.

They will no doubt move in on properties made in other countries too.

All == mining the consumers pockets and exhausting them of interest in the show's ideas and characters as quickly as possible.

Don't underestimate the scalability of this. Its Nigerian emails all over again. Alec has laid down a highway for them during the course of paving his own path to riches. The studios had better blow it up. Media is one of the main revenue streams of the world.

The studios set some guidelines that will manage fans. But to obtain a solid precedent against amoral pirates they had better roll back a real assault in court, too. Its point-of-production intervention, so its not like Napster and file sharing. They might have a chance to keep control of their IP.

I imagine the backup plan looks something like this:

They have and will continue to do so. The studios will not stand idly by as someone destroys their profit centers. Everyone remembers Napster.

Go ahead, make my day.

Was that from the BSG panel mentioned a few pages back?
I wonder how many people were pissed that what was supposed to be a BSG panel turned into an Axanar panel? I know if I went expecting a discussion of the BSG franchise and they started talking about a Star Trek fan film, I'd be pissed.
