Ok, it's been a few days since AP's last escapade. Let's not allow the lack of entertainment to turn us on each other.

If history is any indicator, it's just a matter of time before His Majesty graces us with more idiocy to laugh at. :techman:

They never actually pitched to CBS. I think the whole "pilot" thing was a tax break.
I'm pretty sure that they've at least claimed to have hired a lawyer who talked to CBS on their behalf about making Star Trek: Renegades a series. I can understand being skeptical about it, but do you have some additional information I don't?

Every time I think Peters has actually stopped doing or saying stupid shit, and this thread will finally be unnecessary, he goes and does or says something stupid and the thread just keeps on going.

for over 50 years we've been searching to answer that single question, What is Star Trek?
It's like the Mona Lisa ripped in pieces from the wall and strewn to the wind. A sense of loss was felt among the masses as they looked towards the gods of creation to restore this once great icon to the people.
One god steps up, "Star Trek is diversity, follow me! we will create the most diverse Star Trek ever."
The next god steps up. "Star Trek is about the ship and awesome technology. Follow me and we will create the most powerful ship the universe has ever seen.
The third god comes forward, No, no you have it all wrong. Star Trek is about alien races all living in harmony"
This has continued on as one by one the gods of creation have presented their vision in an epic build up answered by an "Oh dear what was that?"
Take another look at the Mona Lisa. Recreated today right down to the brush stroke would it be the Mona Lisa?
I think not because the creation was a reflection of it's creator and Da Vinci was already a noted student of the sciences.
Without Gene's success and failures that made up his life experiences, how could anyone be expected to recreate that which was Star Trek in this day and age?

If one were being cynical one could call that "going through the motions".

It was a looooong time ago, but I'm pretty sure CBS never actually viewed the pilot, simply saying they couldn't do anything regarding Trek right now, which was later speculated to be due to the no-compete clause with Paramount which expired in 2016. Here on TrekBBS it was pointed out that they'd saved tax money by presenting Renegades as a pilot. Of course the Axanar debacle was going down at the time and everyone was at their most pessimistic regarding fan films.

To be fair, they did make a follow-up episode with the intent of continuing and becoming a fan-funded Trek, and then non-Trek series. I'd have liked them to continue as an original IP, introducing original elements into their universe and tweaking their Trek legacy characters to make them more distinct.

I don't see how presenting it as a pilot affects taxes. The IRS doesn't care that it's Star Trek or Space Voyage, or that it's a pilot or a one-off or whatever. It's all about how you structured your company and what your tax liability is based on revenue and profit/loss.

I can tell you what happened but I am not allowed to give out names. Sorry.

Renegades had entertainment lawyer who has a big reputation in the industry and who has a very close relationship with someone pretty high up at CBS. CBS saw the pilot, they liked the concept and thought the concept would work well as TV series. The problem was they were in a non-compete with Paramount. At the time, they were not allowed to put out any Star Trek TV show until the the Paramount-Bad Robot contract to make 3 films was complete (Beyond, the 3rd film was in production during this) . Also, they were also looking at some other ideas (which I took as other producers making some pitches, cough.. Bryan Fuller, etc..) . So that was that. By the time Beyond came out, it was then safe for them to say they would have a new series (Disco) coming out the following year.

I have noticed though, recently that some of the CBS announced shows seem a little Renegades like :) For instance the Section 31 show with rag-tag rouge agents, and even in the Picard show , the crew is a bunch of misfists and people with issues. So who is to say Renegades did not have some impression on them. :)

Also the tax thing, totally not true, not sure where that came from.

I heard the tax thing came from either here or one of the Axanar FB groups. But I stand corrected.

I've got a pilot! Tell me how to get that sweet, sweet tax money!

DOH! :wah:

I saw a name from much earlier in the Axanar saga pop up in the news again today. Anyone remember attorney Marc Randaza, who filed a "friend of the court" brief on behalf of the Language Creation Society, in the CBS suit against Axanar. They claimed that the Klingon language couldn't be copyrighted, since it was now a living language. Part of the brief was even written in Klingon. It was an entertaining sideshow to the lawsuit, which was dropped by CBS about 3 weeks later.

Turns out, Randazza wanted to represent conspiracy nutjob Alex Jones, who is being sued in Connecticut court for defamation by parents & survivors of the Sandyhook school shooting. But the judge won't let him onto the case, citing his "serious misconduct" in several other states. Huffpost has a detailed story about Randazza's sordid misbehavior over the last few years. (See Huffpost article.) Surprisingly, it doesn't mention the Axanar case! Ah, well. Randazza remains a classy guy...

Going rogue and ragtag predates even Star Wars. It's from The Dirty Dozen and earlier. It's a trope.

Axanar blog has two short updates.

Some more work on the bridge set has been done:
https://axanarproductions.com/ares-bridge-update/

And patches from the Indiegogo campaign are about to be shipped:
https://axanarproductions.com/indiegogo-patches-shipping-update-your-address/
And in other meaningless updates, I had a doctor's appointment today. It went fine.

And I still, still, do not understand why its taking this long to mail cloth patches. They should have gotten the donor addresses with the donations. It should have been the easiest freaking thing in the world to box something and put it in a mailbox. Why do they need to have everybody update their addresses to do that this time?

And its not that I don't suspect there's some kind of dodge involved. Of course there is. I just can't figure out the dodge. How does LFIM profit from this bait and switch mail fraud?
