And what was it? $25 mil to do it with? And I strongly suspect not in a warehouse?

Out of curiosity, is not a sound stage basically a massive superset of a warehouse, or are there specific structural differences that require the building to be built specifically as a sound stage? Is it a situation where a warehouse can be converted to a sound stage, but it's better to simply build one from scratch?

A sound stage is designed so that scaffolding and lights can be hung from the ceiling without interior supports. A warehouse may or may not have clear-space (most have interior supports) but they typically are not designed to handle structural loads from the ceiling; that would be something that would need to be designed for. Most importantly, they are sound-proof which a warehouse is not.

@feek61, so I take it that in order to turn most (sufficiently tall) warehouses into sound stages, you'd basically have to construct a sort of building-within-a-building, at which point one would have to wonder why you're not just creating one from scratch. Is that about right?

Now that I think of it, if you're hell bent on converting a property, wouldn't a high school be a better choice? You could convert the gymnasium to the actual sound stage, and you'd already have a cafeteria for catering, bathrooms, shower rooms, and plenty of office space and parking. You might even have a shop class room you can use to build things like sets.

Then again, if you have millions of dollars to buy up a high school, you might as well just buy the Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta. It's for sale and it's already set up. ;)

The biggest key would be what the designed roof load is; that would determine if you could really do much in regards to a real studio. It is very unusual that roofs are designed to carry significant more load than the minimum requirement; mostly due to the cost. It's basically just wasted money to over design it and then there is the sound-proofing which is critical.

So any structure that can physically support the weight can be converted to a sound stage by simply adding rigging/electrical/sound proofing? Or are there other considerations? (Obviously, office space, changing rooms, et cetera, are considerations, but a lot of that can be added to an existing structure so long as you have the space.)

Say, is there such a thing as a franchise/chain that specializes in filming against a green screen? Seems like you could hire one architect to design a building with a small sound stage and supporting facilities, set up deals with various lighting and rigging manufactures, and sell a franchise where you could have an app to find the closest one and schedule time there. Insurance and crew could be included in the price, and the app could even have matchmaking software to find local actors. Kinda like a strange combination of McDonalds and Uber, only for green screen.

Not that I'm married to green screen, for I will not rest until the Sodium Vapor Process lives again!!!

In related con man news...…...Looks like TNG bridge project and Hollywood Sci-Fi museum may have hit a tiny little snag, there had been rumors for years:

Huston Huddleston was arrested on April 24, 2018 for Felony charges and held on $750,000.00 bail. Huston is being held at the Pitchess Detention Center North Facility with a court date set for June 12, 2018. [9]

Floyd "Huston" Huddleston has been charged with penal codes: [10]

288.3(A) - Contacting a Minor with Intent to Commit a Felony.

311.4(C) - Makes it a crime to hire, employ, use, persuade, or coerce a minor to participate in the production of child porn.

311.11(A) - Makes it a crime to possess or control any pornography produced using a person under 18.
And following up on the the quoted message above, KennyB was correct that it was the same guy... and said guy has pled guilty to one count of possessing child pornography. The other charges were dismissed. He was sentenced to time served, three years probation, and has to register as a sex offender. (link).

Yup---pretty much like nothing happened except registering on the offender list. I would bet he violates probation before the 36 months is up.

You know what? Fuck them. Gerrold started his career with plagiarism, and his golden years are more of the same.

He could, instead of defending himself, say he was sorry and not try and publish the thing. But ... no. Sigh.

Zero sympathy. He knows the business. He would have lost his mind if someone stole his work.

A con within a con? How the mighty hath fallen!!! Lol.
I love the follow up/interview/kissycuddletime on Flim Flam Factor where Alec complains ‘bout how he isn’t making any money off the private tours of the unfinished sets, and tell J-Lame he will have to share a room.
Alec’s only purpose in holding this con is to prove to Larry at OWC that he is legit and worth the free rent. Can’t afford to lose that storage unit just yet.
