We never got it for free. We got it at the cost of watching ads. Since that revenue source is dying, the alternative is to either pay for it - and at the same time much more directly show our support than was ever possible via Nielsen ratings - or not have a show at all.
Again, at the end of the business day CBS’S market cap was $23.5 BILLION Dollars. ..From 2009 to 2017 the companies stock has gone from $3.36 to it’s current value of $58.89 per share. That is an increase of 1,652%...The idea that this mega corporation can’t afford to produce new Star Trek episodes and put them on broadcast tv or better yet put them on Netflix (who is paying for a good part of it) is laughable.
If you believe that you wouldn’t have new ST because they couldn’t afford to put it on broadcast tv or that Nielsen ratings are so down that broadcast tv is obsolete, I have a beautiful bridge in Brooklyn I would love to sell you...I’m sorry for the sarcasm, but CBS is doing really, really well financially

The bottom line is they are attempting to add more revenue streams (I understand that they are a corporation and it is their goal to make as much money as possible for their stockholders) and they are doing this by trying attempting to lure in Star Trek’s loyal/die hard fan base.
Q) What do Star Trek fans get for their 50+ years of loyalty?
A) a monthly bill, a crappy app that has commercials and doesn’t work very well. Programing besides ST is below the average Star Trek fan. Shall I go on? Thanks for alienating your fans CBS!
In my opinion it’s going to fail. Discovery’s will have a niche audience at best and be dead on arrival at worse.
CBS is being short sighted in an attempt to grow their All Access app that reaches only 4 million people at the moment. Compare that to broadcast tv or even Netflix that with the American audience (by far ST’s biggest fanbase) which has 104 million subscribers (52 million of those are in the US and will not be able to see Discovery) and they are doing a disservice to Star Trek by burying it somewhere where most Americans can’t see it for free and the vast majority won’t pay for it...It may be a great program, but almost nobody in the United States is going to see it so what’s the point? They would be much better off letting the program try and find a large mainstream audience.

I just love this quote. It hits it right on the head for what CBS is trying to do with ST. It never ceases to amaze me how people can’t see it for what it is and will happily accept the corporate line.
“As we celebrate mediocrity, all the boys upstairs want to see how much how much you’ll pay for something you used to get for free”
