CBS Is Right To Make Us Pay For 'Star Trek: Discovery'

That Sherlock Holmes series isn't bad...

Honestly? Outside of FOX, I haven't watched network TV in quite a while. I think the last thing I watched on ABC was a season one episode of Agents of Shield, and part of the first season of Revolution on NBC.

I guess I'm the outlier who likes police procedurals, NCIS, archives of JAG, Odd Couple, Cheers, Flashpoint, among others...

The last thing I watched regularly on CBS was 'Supergirl' season 1. I have friends who like Hawaii 5-0, NCIS and CSI (I was never much into cop shows although I did watch ADAM-12, DRAGNET, and because my Dad loved it - pol,ice Story growing up.) ;)

But yeah, the CBS network itself hasn't had much to draw my interest beyond that one season of one show (that I now DVR off the CW. (Of course yes, I know CBS has a stake in the CW as well of course so I guess maybe I do like stuff broadcast by CBS corporate.:wtf::shrug::rommie:
I still think the CW Shows should be put on all access and they leave the entire season up.

Not at all. Lots of people like them, as the ratings consistently show. I'm just not one of them.

I would not have a problem if this were on Netflix. CBS has zero other content for me that I am interested in watching. Then this app makes me pay and adds commercials and 42 minutes or less episodes? With 2.0 sound?

Nobody I know is getting this. They are either pirating it, using a VPN to get it on Netflix or waiting till next year where they will buy one month and watch them all then cancel.

I'm pleased that the people we associate with have different values. I don't know anyone who is not watching it through legitimate means.

Was referring to on this board, since I'm seeing constant digs at CBS and it confuses me.

People hate CBS because they "ruined Trek beyond all recognition" and have the gall to expect money and profit from their efforts.

So naturally there isn't a minute of programming available on the entire network that is worth more than a pile of llama feces.

Lol well it's not a large sample. If the five people I have talked to about this show three waiting to watch it next year, one VPN and one looking online. I'm the only one who paid of this group. I may cancel too and wait till next year.

That wasn't what I said at all. They haven't had anything that appeals to me for a long time now. Procedurals, which is what a good portion of their schedule is built on, simply aren't my thing.

I honestly didn't mean you. I was thinking more the inflamed, enraged protesters in other online venues.

Ragging on CBS is a pretty common activity on the Internet, and it has nothing to do with Star Trek. CBS is the network TV equivalent of comfort food to some. People say it appeals to an older demographic and is therefore 'not cool.' Those are just a few things I've read online. YMMV.

No, I have no interest in awards shows. Probably been years since I've watched anything on CBS.
I try to catch the Emmys, though the Oscars are what I look forward to every year.

Local news?
Meh. We have a number of local news stations I prefer over CBS. Our NBC affiliate is much better at reporting, and also the signal looks better.

So, I just went to CBS All Access to cancel my free one-week subscription so that I don't get charged on Monday.

And guess what popped up when I hit "Cancel"?

So, they'll auto-renew on November 2nd if I don't cancel, but they're giving me the next month free.

When you read about all the subscriptions that CBS is getting right now, remember this: they're "papering the house," to use an old-fashioned show biz term. No doubt that every free one-week trial that people signed up for last week is being counted as a "new subscription," as is every one-month free that people re-up for.

^ I initially signed up for the free week on the $6/month plan, then decided I wanted to go with no commercials so I "upgraded" to the $10/month plan and was instantly charged the $10.

So you got a month without commercials for ten bucks and I got a month with commercials for: zip, nothing, nada.

That does sound fair when you put it like that.

They charged me for my month when it came up as a free one. When I complained, they told me that I had signed up at 10:01 PM, and my free trial ran out at 9:59 PM, which is odd because I had signed up for my free one week trial at 4 AM the previous Monday. Those bastards got 6 free hours out of me and charged me for them.

But that wasn't the vision or the goal or the marketing strategy/ target audience of the show.

It's like saying "I don't want to pay $250 to go eat at this 5-star steakhouse...maybe they should just get cheaper, lower quality food so I can go eat there." That completely defeats the purpose of the differentiation of the restaurant. Having a high-budget, expensive, glossy show with excellent production values is part of the strategy. It's part of the identity of the show. Whether you agree with that or not isn't relevant. That's the strategy. If you want Applebees, go eat at Applebee's. Don't complain about the cost of the expensive steakhouse with the valet parking if that's not what floats your boat.

I'm a steakhouse guy...so I'm fine with it.

But are the special effects really supose to be the 5-star steakhouse in this metaphor? I thought the writing and acting and story was supose to be the main drawl? The special effects are supose to be the garnish on the side. In fact I would say Fuller and any Trek at all after 12 years off the air was the main selling point. If someone said it would have the budget of a CW show would that rally hurt anyone's expectations?

I dislike CBS because I think almost all of their shows are mindless pap and a whole streaming service where most the shows are pap is not appealing.

I am glad I live Canada, I can watch this show on Space, Space's website or Crave TV (which sounds better then CBS All Access, because it has Hand Maid's Tale and old HBO shows). CBS All Access doesn't give you enough for its asking price.

The "free month" didn't seem to work for me. I got the notice, but when I clicked redeem, nothing happened but I was taken back to the main page.
