News CBS files trademark for new series STAR TREK: RELIANT

Any chance it'll be based on the "Destiny" Trek novel series, albeit loosely?

Here's the synopsis of the series, based on Memory Alpha, http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Star_Trek:_Destiny:
The Borg return – with a vengeance! Blitzkrieg attacks by the single-minded aliens with their hive mentality and their mission to assimilate every intelligent being they encounter are leaving whole worlds aflame. No one knows how they are slipping past Starfleet's defenses, so Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the Enterprise crew are detailed to find out – and to put a stop to it if they can. Meanwhile, thousands of light years away, Captain Will Riker and the crew of the Titan follow bizarre energy pulses to a mysterious, hidden world. There they find a figure out of legend: a Starfleet captain long thought dead. And at the same time, over in the Gamma Quadrant, newly-promoted Captain Dax and her crew investigate the wreck of the Earth starship Columbia NX-02, missing in action for more than two centuries.

If it's following the novels, that means Picard will return to Starfleet due to a renewed threat from the Borg and because of his past experiences with them (from "Best of Both Worlds" and "First Contact") he's holding the key to stop the threat once and for all.

Sounds intriguing but isn't it repetitive by reusing 'the Borg threatening the Federation" plot over again??

No.

I still say the Picard series will feature Picard as an ambassador, being ferried around to various important missions by the USS Whatever, staffed by the hot young crew that can do the action stuff, and USS Whatever could be Reliant, Destiny, etc.

PS Duhkat, I'm stealing that signature quote hah.

After reading this at TrekMovie which centers around an Instagram post by Michael Chabon...
michael.chabonSo we finished our first amazing two weeks in the #space2999writers’ room, and I think all you 99ers out there are really going to “grok” what we have planned. (Hint: Metamorphs! But you didn’t hear it from me.) [Note: this post has been certified free of Trek hints and/or spoilers by the United Federation of Planets’ Standards Measurement Bureau]
...I am spit-balling an idea based on the Destiny name mentioned in this thread, the Space 1999 references, the Metamorphs hint, and the Robert. A. Heinlein Stranger in a Strange Land "grok" reference.

Star Trek: Destiny
2399. Jean-Luc Picard has traded in his days warping around the galaxy searching for new life for those of discovering the secrets of lives long forgotten. On the outskirts of Federation space, the discovery of an ancient civilization of Metamorphs propels the former Captain into a race against time in a strange world to uncover the mysterious clues leading to a revelation that will not only transform him, but may very well change the destiny of the entire Federation forever

All in fun, but it will be interesting to see if there happens to be anything I've touched on that shows up in what they are planning.

CBS didn't stop at Star Trek: Reliant and Destiny. They have also trademarked Star Trek: Revolution, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and Star Trek: Ceti Alpha V. Not sure what will all these be used for.

These are the tentative names of the upcoming five Star Trek series I assume? We all know that 'Destiny' is the most likely title for Sir Patrick Stewart/Picard new Trek series

Over the past two decades there were ongoing rumors CBS wanted to make a Trek series based on Starfleet Academy, so seeing they're now trade-marking it now is not surprising.

Presumably 'Alphi Ceti V'and 'Reliant' are the miniseries based on the misadventures of Khan Noonien Singh and his genetically enhanced henchpersons.

'Lower Decks' is a popular ST TNG episode chronicling a day in the life of a bunch of junior Entereprise-D crews, so this might be a miniseries or series featuring junior crews of a leading flagship similar to the Enterprise. Alternatively it'll be the continuation of a 'Starfleet Academy' miniseries featuring the same group of cadets as they graduated from the Academy and became junior officers.

'Revolution' could've meant anything. My own guess: it's about a civil war within Starfleet where the powers that be has become nothing but corrupt, power hungry leaders controlled by Section 31 and a group of idealist officers are starting a revolution to uphold good Federation principles set up by Gene Roddenberry (aka what would've happened if there's a violent shootout b/w Sisko and officers loyal to Admiral Leyton in DS9's 'Paradise Lost').

Or alternatively a series based in Mirror Universe chronicling a Game-of-Thrones style civil war between those who seek to succeed Emperor Georgiou or Emperor Tiberius Kirk.

In any case, stay tuned until CBS/Paramount reveals what exactly are their game plans vis-a-vis the new series.

I cannot wait for the Starfleet Academy series.

Alpha Ceti V suggests they may be moving ahead with the Khan series which sounds... uninteresting.

I think many are assuming Picard will be an ambassador, but what about an archaeologist? He sure seemed to have an interest throughout TNG. Maybe that's his destiny?

I want Star Trek: Lower Decks to basically be a massively expanded version of Red Shirt Diaries, set during TOS episodes:p

Any chance the Picard series might include two actors playing Picard, at different points in his life? Just wondering, if indeed Reliant is named after a ship that Picard served on pre-Stargazer. It would be weird - like TNG All Good Things but as a series.

Not suggesting it's a good idea or a likely idea - just an idea. :bolian:
