As for the subject at hand-I'd love to see similar modernizations of other classic literary action characters, in particular Doc Savage.

Well, Shane Black is working an a Doc Savage movie (unless it ended up in development hell, by now), that might be set in the present.

I'd actually like to see a take on Philip Marlowe set in the present.

Sadly, that movie (to star Chris Hemsworth) will most likely be set in the 1930's again.

Actually, the writer of that report simply assumes the movie to be set in the 1930s. Nothing indicates that this is the official word.
