It's the other way around: CBS is cheating consumers by expecting them to pay monthly just to watch one show
Of course they aren't, because paying monthly will give you access to
dozens of shows, if not hundreds, just as on Netflix and Hulu and all the other streaming services out there already. They expect people to come onboard for
Star Trek and stick around for the rest of the content they have to offer. And, of course, they expect plenty of people to come onboard All Access for the various other CBS programming it offers besides
Star Trek. Not everyone is a Trek fan, after all. It's the exact same thing Paramount did when they founded UPN and used
Voyager as its flagship show. They didn't expect people to watch
Voyager exclusively; the whole point was to attract their interest with
Star Trek and then hope they'd stick around for the rest of what the network had to offer (although much of that wasn't very impressive to start with). Yes, of course there would be some viewers who would only care about
Star Trek and nothing else, but they're not the entire audience base.
Consumers who do what you said will be getting ripped off a bit less than consumers who do not, but CBS is still in the wrong and consumers are still getting ripped off whether or not they wait for all the episodes to be released.
Oh, what self-entitled garbage. Nobody's ripping you off, because they're telling you exactly what you'll get and what you'll have to do to get it. If you don't find those terms satisfactory enough to opt in, that's your free and informed choice, and you won't be forced to give anyone your money unless you choose to. Ripping off means theft or fraud, and neither of those applies here. No, the program will not be given to you free of charge, but neither are countless other programs on cable or satellite television. Neither are theatrical feature films, books, comics, video games, etc. You're not entitled to them by right; they're merchandise that you have to pay for. That's not theft, it's a commercial transaction. If you can't get your hands on the show because you're not willing to pay for it, that doesn't make you a victim of fraud, it just makes you a consumer with finite resources, like everyone else.
And it's a safe bet, anyway, that the show will eventually be released on DVD, whereupon you can get it from Amazon or Netflix or even borrow it for free from your library. Some "ripoff."
