CBS Confirms STAR TREK 2017 Episodes To Arrive Weekly

I disagree; it's trying to reshape the future in the form of the past. Being forced to subscribe to a service -- and pay for 100 pieces of content you don't want only to watch the one or two that you really want -- is the same old model. That's their endgame. And when their services reach whatever threshold they're aiming for, they'll stop licensing content to other vendors. Not just Netflix; but probably also Amazon, Apple, and other a la carte options.

It'll be just like buying cable all over again -- and every bit as expensive and inflexible; just the way they like it.

I wasn't endorsing it, just saying that it's the way things seem to be going.

I was very encouraged to hear that the episodes were to be released weekly. The binge-watching model is fine for some shows, but I think that it is difficult to build anticipation or keep plot details secret when you can watch every episode in a day.

Very true, everyone talking about cord cutting and thin cable bundles as a huge savings for consumers must be looking at different prices than I am. With exclusive content on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, CBSAA, plus the legacy cable premiums like HBO/Showtime, putting together a package of subscription services very quickly starts to cost a similar amount to a cable bill. Especially if you add Sling, PS Vue, or something similar to get those "slim" cable packages.

At the end of the day, it makes sense from the companies perspective. Consumers have shown what they're willing to spend and companies are not interested in saving consumers money, just finding other ways for them to spend the same or more money. So why should they sell content to multiple providers or lower prices? They're responsibility is to shareholder value, not consumers.

What about after episodes premiere... will they remain available for repeat viewing and if so, what's to stop someone from waiting until all season episodes are up then subscribe, binge-watch, unsubscribe.

Not that I would do that, but I am wondering how CBSAA will deal with this potential cheating of system.

It's the other way around: CBS is cheating consumers by expecting them to pay monthly just to watch one show, and further cheating consumers by this "weekly episode" model. Consumers who do what you said will be getting ripped off a bit less than consumers who do not, but CBS is still in the wrong and consumers are still getting ripped off whether or not they wait for all the episodes to be released.

Does this mean that since the episodes will be available for rewatching on CBSAA that there won't be a DVD release?

Of course they aren't, because paying monthly will give you access to dozens of shows, if not hundreds, just as on Netflix and Hulu and all the other streaming services out there already. They expect people to come onboard for Star Trek and stick around for the rest of the content they have to offer. And, of course, they expect plenty of people to come onboard All Access for the various other CBS programming it offers besides Star Trek. Not everyone is a Trek fan, after all. It's the exact same thing Paramount did when they founded UPN and used Voyager as its flagship show. They didn't expect people to watch Voyager exclusively; the whole point was to attract their interest with Star Trek and then hope they'd stick around for the rest of what the network had to offer (although much of that wasn't very impressive to start with). Yes, of course there would be some viewers who would only care about Star Trek and nothing else, but they're not the entire audience base.

Oh, what self-entitled garbage. Nobody's ripping you off, because they're telling you exactly what you'll get and what you'll have to do to get it. If you don't find those terms satisfactory enough to opt in, that's your free and informed choice, and you won't be forced to give anyone your money unless you choose to. Ripping off means theft or fraud, and neither of those applies here. No, the program will not be given to you free of charge, but neither are countless other programs on cable or satellite television. Neither are theatrical feature films, books, comics, video games, etc. You're not entitled to them by right; they're merchandise that you have to pay for. That's not theft, it's a commercial transaction. If you can't get your hands on the show because you're not willing to pay for it, that doesn't make you a victim of fraud, it just makes you a consumer with finite resources, like everyone else.

And it's a safe bet, anyway, that the show will eventually be released on DVD, whereupon you can get it from Amazon or Netflix or even borrow it for free from your library. Some "ripoff."

I am curious how many of the people that once lead the charge to "Cut the cable, embrace the new world order of streaming services!" are now bemoaning this business decision by CBS.

My wife and I are cord cutters, we are fine with this. I'm honestly not sure why we wouldn't be? CBS has content we want to watch, there is a relatively small monthly fee associated with it, we can choose to pay it or not, in this case we are. It's the way the system should work. We are paying for the content we want access to. And not other content (for example, say, the WWE Network) that we don't want access to.

A publisher looking to make money on their products? Absolute bastards! We, as fans of everything, should be entitled to it for free!

As a sidenote, when are we installing sarcasm tags?

do to axanar sueing both CBS and paramount over his fan film he is to kick it out on the streets and let it be there, I never did like JJ's film as far I know in jan-30?-2017 in court and tell the judge all about his fan film and CBS will lose this case. But I am just hopping to go to LA CA in my old TOS shirt but CBS say I can't have it on. Take a wild guess this. I want everyone who see this to do the same. I don't know much about the next gen my self but you need to look it up under copyright for them.
I don't like where CBS or paramount is going with this. Do any one in the Hollywood area can they keep a eye on that studio. And report back to here?.

Do to axanar

Can we please just keep all of the Axanar drama in the Axanar thread?

I have to wonder if the weekly release for the new series is just because that's how CBS has always done things. Amazon and Netflix were never broadcast networks, so they had no attachment to the way they do things, while CBS is still primarily a TV network.
Yep. Although the series is slated only for CBS All Access in the U.S.- production wise, to CBS it's just another Television show, and they have decades of experience in how to handle that method of production efficiently; so that's how they'll go.

Plus, there's probably more Post Production (with the effects, etc.) required - and faster turnaround on stuff like CGI = higher cost; so again, as they see it - one episode per 'week' is the safest/most economical way to do it.
