Causing Debates

I think TREK, whether an episode, a movie, or fan-fic, is really at its best, for me at least, when it caused you to think, or better yet, causes people to debate an issue addresed in the story

We all have our own beliefs about the Prime Directive, Captain styles, ethics of Star Trek. Some think Matt Decker was a hero, others think was a fool. Some like Captains who violate the PD, others perfer those who hold up the ideas of the Federation....

But when the story causes these issues to be debate I really believe the writer(s) have done a great job. TREK to me isn't the best at FX, it is at its best when inspiring discussion..

Yes, I agree. It's why 'The Measure of a Man' is one of my favourite episodes. It raises interesting arguments both for and against considering androids as self-aware beings.

ENT's Cogenitor was another one that elicited strong opinions... (anybody left who recalls the Did Trip/Archer do the right thing parallel discussions a couple of years back?)

This is a good argument against Trek on the big screen. People expect an epic story, lots of great FX, lots of whizz-bam. That's why no Trek movie can match the best episodes. The focus is away from Trek's greatest stength.

Actually, I think it's a good argument for making a serious, low-key Star Trek film. Ultimately I think that's the failing of the film franchise versus the TV franchise: Save the first one, the films always have to go for the epic confrontations and obligatory laser battles. Sometimes it works (and inserts a lot of themes and/or Star Trek social commentary) and sometimes it doesn't.

But there have been intelligent sci-fi films and, barring this post-Star Wars perception that all space opera movies must be action-adventure, there's no reason why Star Trek shouldn't do one itself.

Yes, I do! That was a fun thread, full of interesting observations and opinions.

I agree. That was amazing. Sadly, it's probably been culled...

I agree, the films were often trying to be bigger than they needed to be, and have a certain amount of almost obligatory content. How many movies have to have a dramatic countdown? And I find less than satisfying starship battles outside of the earlier films, rarely giving any sense of scale and pacing.
And the strong points are often those parts of the stories left uninflated.

I would be happy with a more of a character building movie for this one, the opposite of Nemesis... more like Superman Returns, more setting the storyline for future movies.

First Contact was a damn good action movie, though.
