Castle & Beckett team up with a Federal Investigator to hunt down a cunning and elusive serial killer.

I like it that the preview for next week didn't give away whether Beckett survived. That's refreshing, especially considering that the previews for this episode completely spoiled the explosion at the end.

I kinda wish the plot hadn't been quite so much of an infomercial for the "actual" Heat Wave book, though on the other hand, it is a clever bit of cross-media synergy and it works well in-universe. As product placements go, it'd be hard to find one that fit more organically into the narrative.

I love it that of all the Susan Sullivan clips they could've picked, they chose my favorite, her role as Elaina Marks from the Incredible Hulk pilot. I guess that means that in the Castleverse, Martha Rogers played Elaina Marks. Or else "Susan Sullivan" was her stage name.

Actually, the editor in me loves the way they keep promoting the book. I have NEVER seen this level of coordination between a tv show and a tie-in novel before. It's astounding.

And it's not even my book!

I have to admit, it's kinda working. I'm thinking of getting the novel from the library. (Wish I knew who actually wrote it, though.)

And you're right -- better to see a book promoted in a show rather than just a car or a cell phone or something that doesn't need the promotion as much.

Hey, I just noticed that the humongous book looming behind the cast in that publicity photo seems to be Heat Wave. I'm assuming those are actual pages from the novel. And I just bet that the page number/word count code in the episode actually works with the book.

It's a fun book. I had to wait weeks for a library copy, because of the long waiting list, but I enjoyed it.

Have you noticed, by, that Castle's editor has not been seen since the pilot? She was originally featured in some of the early cast photos, but I notice she's missing from the shot above. Maybe Castle needs to get a new editor?

And, you know, I can totally see Kate Beckinsale as "Nikki Heat" . . . .

My best guess is that the actual writer is Tom Straw, as Heat Wave cites Castle as having "received the Nom DePlume Society's prestigious Tom Straw Award for Mystery Literature."

Ooh! A brilliant deduction, Sherlock! You may be onto something . . . .

I got the book for the wife at Christmas and really enjoyed it. I see where the second one, Naked Heat, will be out in September--be interesting to see if it gets as much of a tie-in as this one did.

Minor, cryptic spoiler for the book . . .

When Beckett was in the shower at the end, I briefly wondered if we were going to get a homage to a certain memorable fight scene in the book . . . .

Holy sh*t... This was the first time since Kobols Last Gleaming part 2 that my jaw has dropped THAT MUCH while watching a TV show. I think the fact that its usually a light hearted show of sorts added to the shock factor.

Based on how the others were talking about casting, are there characters based on them too in the Nikki Heat novel? I wonder if there would be any dynamic change/conflict in the show if one of the other cops became popular enough for Castle to write a spin-off novel.

The novel is sneaky in that it's a basically a CASTLE novel with all the names changed. Besides "Nikki Heat," there are analogues to all the major characters, including a wise-cracking, yet raffishly charming, writer type.

The only difference between the show and the novel is that "Nikki" and the writer guy actually have sex in the book!

If Castle ever had an arc where they're on location for the Heat Wave movie, who should they get since Kate Beckinsale would be out of the question? Morena Baccarin as the cop and Alan Tudyk as the writer? :)

How much is the plot of the novel based on the storylines of the first season? Because that was the whole point of the premise -- that he was following Beckett to get material for the book. I guess it's possible that could just be the characters, but I think it would mesh better if elements of the book's plot were based on the "actual" cases Castle and Beckett investigated during the development and writing of Heat Wave.

And the second book is going to be called Naked Heat? Really? Ohh, Beckett's gonna hate that...

As I recall, the mystery in the book was an original one, not directly inspired by any of the episodes.

And, believe me, there's plenty of "naked Heat" in the first book.

I give it an Excellent.
Since Castle is the only thing I watch on ABC, I wasn't spoiled by previews.

I was really glad to see Dana Delany play a tough, but not bitchy, FBI investigator. Not so much because I'm a fan of Delany, but because I really despise the Mary McDonnell character on The Closer, and I didn't want her twin turning up here.

I figure Nikki ... er, Kate ;), made a dash for the bathtub. Hope she had time to turn on the water! Of course all her clothes were destroyed, so next time Castle sees her, she be wearing nothing but a towel. :)

I read the book, then watched the first season on DVD and, while the storyline didn't necessarily go with the show, a lot of the small details did. Like the writer banging on the one-way mirror so hard that the suspect could hear him, or the charming older fence that he'd used as a source in a previous book. Small things like that, but there were a number of them.

Castle can be on the set of Heat Wave and Alan Tudyk can be the actor playing the writer. Castle can say to him that he really loved that space cowboy show he was on a few years back, and Tudyk will dismiss it as being cheesy TV and having been beneath him. :)

My daughter has unfortunately taken my copy off somewhere so I can't flip through it to refresh my memory...

There are two authors quoted on the back cover giving glowing reviews, and I had the impression it was a collaberation between them. But I prefer to think Rick Castle wrote it...

The book is great if you are a fan of the series, imagine buying the "deluxe" DVD's with plenty of extras and trading cards and a poster and action figures.. Haven't we all at one time or another splurged? It's a good read, but it's also a nifty toy. It's even dedicated to Kate.

I'm just watching season 1 over again, got the dvd's (made me think of that comparison) and I'd say the novel has elements from all or most of the season 1 eps. A bit here, a line of dialogue there, as I go through the season I keep thinking "Hey...". In a good way. Easter egg kind of way. It's a really cute concept.
Castle showing up at Beckett's with a bottle of wine was in the novel, as the night they had sex. Interestingly, nothing happened in the show, I didn't think it would but I was kind of on the edge of my seat knowing what had happened in Heat Wave. And then I thought, Rick and Kate both know the novel, they both knew that scene...

I gave this episode an "Excellent". Really enjoyed this. I liked the Dana Delaney character and the twinges of jealousy that Beckett displayed at seeing Castle all puppy-doggy around her. And I too liked the use of the Susan Sullivan clip from the Hulk, and can totally see Kate Beckinsale in the role of Beckett for the movie. She can even do an American accent. Looking forward to next week!

Oh, and I've also got Heat Wave on request at the library, though I'm still around 150 in the queue. I'm sure the paperback will be out long before I'm anywhere near getting it from the library! :D
