Castle season 8 discussion thread - spoilers

Rear Admiral
Season 8 starts tonight, and like Cubs fans every year, I'm hopeful for a good season.
I don't know why, but I have a good feeling about this one!

So apparently when you become captain on the show, your screen time drops significantly to match that of Montgomery and Gates.

New cast addition has already had more lines than Lanie probably did all of last season.

Nice to see Alexis' role possibly increased again after being reduced to practically nothing the past couple seasons.

Not a bad start to the season, that was fun, albeit completely implausible. I guess that's normal for Castle though.

I only saw part of the ep, but what I did see was ok at best imo. Was disappointed at the lack of Beckett screen time.

This is reminding me of Stargate SG-1 season 8 when RDA took a reduced role. I don't mind the rest of the cast stepping up, especially Alexis, but more Beckett would be nice.
Where was Tori in this episode? After her stint with SHIELD last year, I assumed that she'd be getting more screen time.

Martha stopped being an every-episode character a long time ago. She appeared about as often as Gates did. So did Alexis, but it looks like they're trying to change that.

When Alexis showed up having secretly running Castle's PI firm and revealing a hidden room, it was so glib that I was sure the episode would be a dream sequence or an imaginary play out of one of Castle's stories. By the episode's end I was still thinking that could be true.

Kate as Captain is a pretty major change from the formula; they will have to get repeated excuses to get her into action.

The female PI is apparently a recurring character? Not sure how I feel about this. She is a can of instant superhero. She may grow on me.

The female PI came over from England in pursuit of her case, without notifying any authorities over here, and is running around NYC with a concealed handgun shooting at people?

Not in OUR reality.

Female PI is a new SERIES REGULAR. She'll probably be the new Beckett out in the field with Castle for his PI cases.

I don't like the female PI. At all. Dunno if it was the actress or the way she was written, but I found her really unlikeable.

As far as Alexis, I just assumed the reason she hasn't been around is because Quinn has been in college. According to her IMDB page, she turns 22 in a few weeks, which suggests she would have graduated this past spring, allowing her to come back to work full-time. Granted this is just an assumption; I really have no idea.

Similarly, I think Sullivan probably just wanted to scale back her work. Heck, she's been doing it nonstop for 50 years.

I thought this was a fun episode and a good start to the season. As for the lack of Beckett screen time this week, that's because next week's episode is going to replay the events of this week's from her perspective. That was at least what I read in an interview last weekend, but it does look like some of next week's will move forward from where this one ended.
I'm quite sure what to make of some of the changes they're making this season. I'm really hoping that Beckett's promotion doesn't she'll be spending most of her time behind the desk. The main appeal of the show is Castle and Beckett out solving crimes together, and I don't see how we can get that if she's the boss, and he's barely even working with the cops.
I do like having Alexis working with Castle though, it gave us some fun stuff this week, and it'll give her more of a get easily involved in the cases.
I didn't mind the new female PI too much, but I'd rather not see a lot of her if it means less Beckett, Espo, and Ryan.
I've been actually been a huge fan of the show since it started, so I'm kind of shocked it took me this long to look for a thread.

The problem I have with the female PI is that she is the solution to problems. Unless she and Castle have an ongoing discord, she ends up being a Mary Sue, just a "perfect" element to every plot.

The show is "Castle", not "Casket" and I can live with a change to the Castle/Becket formula up to a point, even though that is why I stick with the series. The female PI, as presented, is not nearly enough. There have been better options presented throughout the series, like the bodyguard that Xavier was hot for, or the British police detective, or Becket's deceased ex-partner. The show has created some amazing characters over the years. This one I am not so enamoured with. Maybe that will change.

I could probably get into a Rick/Alexis focus, even though that seems contrived, because I am invested in both characters.

While I agree the series of events was a little too convenient, I actually think it's one of the more realistic/natural plot ideas the show has had. It's just Alexis's next step on the relationship path ever child in the world has with her dominant parent.

And, while I'm sure, concerns for her safety are going to come up again and again ... and again, I think, in the end, Castle will acquiesce. What dad wouldn't jump at the chance to spend more time with his daughter?

So apparently the bad guys will be like:

How do we get to Beckett? How about her husband?

No, she moved out of their place but is still working with him professionally, she don't care about him anymore, we've got nothing.

Yeah, that whole episode didn't make much sense.

Beckett moved out of Castle's place? What? :wtf:

Yeah. I have no idea what the hell this show is trying to do, anymore. I just got with it.

Like when the other Cusack said she was "Castle's stepmom." I :brickwall: for a few minutes, then  and moved on.
