Casting Suggestions for New Series

Getting things back on track...
I know that Michael Weatherly is a "favorite" for the new show, but has anyone seen anything that suggests what he's planning to do post-NCIS?

Personally, I think he'd be great in a Trek show.
He would be great, bringing his charm and charisma to whatever role he found himself in.

Ben Miles is a name I'll throw out there.

Sure, most on here won't know who he is, but then again, were William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Avery Brooks or Kate Mulgrew household names when they were casted?

Reason I picked him is because he's a middle-aged Englishman with lots of experience doing theatre... (just kidding).

While he has done theatre, I picked him because he's a very talented actor. Theatre actors mix well with Star Trek, and Miles was nominated for the Best Actor Tony award this year, and has experience on TV and film.

I personally haven't seen much of him, so I'm about as experienced with his work as a lot of you, but from what I've read, he could be an interesting pick. Plus, he looks kind of like Matthew McConaughey!

He reminds me of a younger version of the late Roger Rees (who we lost this past July).

Roger and (I was going to say long term partner but they actually got married) Rick Elice were acquaintances. Well, Rick was a friend of the family (my wife's friend in New York in the 1970s). If this is not too derailing (I'll remove it if it is):

Rick Elice cowrote the successful Broadway musical Jersey Boys with Marshall Brickman. My wife and I had not kept in touch with Rick but heard about him often through his cousin our close friend. We lived in San Diego, California at the time Jersey Boys was in first preview in the La Jolla Playhouse (in 2005 or 2006???).

We had tickets to see the play. According to Rick's cousin he was not going to be at the play until the following week, but as fate would have it, Rick and Roger were seated in the row directly in front of us! He could not miss the opportunity to tweak the show in preview if needed (like the true professional he is). Small world!

We chatted for a while and got Roger's autograph and Rick's too but I told him we already had his autograph. Surprised he said "Oh?"

"Yep, on our marriage license. You were a witness with your cousin Elaine at our wedding in 1980 in Manhattan."

He smiled, "Oh yes that's right."

Roger was the gentle soul everyone said he was at his wake. Huge loss.

I worked for a time at La Costa limousine service in San Diego (southern California) and drove several celebs including Richard Dreyfuss who is currently doing Bernie Madoff, an who was doing Dick Cheney at the time I drove him The ride was silent until I joked "So when are you going to be on Dancing With the Stars?" He roared laughing then said "haven't you been watching? I won it already..." And we had a wonderful conversation from then on. Kidding about ideal DWTS I suggested Woody (Allen) ... to which he laughed "*@# ity %#@ Woody!"

I drove Robert Picardo from the San Diego 2008 COMICON. The drive was about a mile and took almost half hour from the convention traffic (mostly foot traffic). He was still doing Star Gate Atlantis at the time but we hit if off about sci fi in general and Voyager specifically. He spoke of the license production gave cast members which at times were brilliant (my words). We had a good laugh over the line he came up with in the episode Message in a Bottle the lines between the two EMHs were "stop breathing down my neck..." "my breathing is merely a simulation..." so is my neck."

In 2007 I drove Dennis Hopper and his biographer. They sat in the back seat while Mr. Hopper's guest sat in the shot
gun seat from Mr. Hopper's residence in Venice Beach to Carlsbad, California and Taylor Gold where Mr Hopper was treating his guest (J.J. Abrams) to a set of fitted golf clubs.

I did not have a clue who J.J. Abrams was at the time. He helped me at times through the L.A. traffic changing lanes but was mostly busy on his Blackberry the rest of the trip. Given the timing he may have been working on Star Trek 2009. But he was and is a busy man so it could have been anything... and I didn't have a clue at the time who he was.

I have rubbed elbows with some celebs even Trek celebs, but I am humbled by it and privileged to have had the experiences. Nothing more. Well, I did get an autographed glossy from Robert Picardo. Smile. I also got one from Brad Garrett who wrote "stop impersonating my voice" when a coworker (who grew up with him) told him I was doing his voice at the office I worked in at another job. He was going to host us as guests during the final season of Everybody Loves Raymond, but a studio page got their wires crossed and we could not get to the studio before it was closed for shooting. Did get to see Becker (Ted Danson and cast before "Bob" left) recorded before a live audience which was a great experience. Oh and we saw Dancing with the stars when Dolly Parton was the Tuesday night guest (September 2007) we sat in the balcony above the judges.
What a presence that lady has! It doesn't come across on screen like in person.

There are other celebs but I am sure I've put most to sleep by now. Just reliving the year and 5 months I ventured into that business. Tank you f' vatching...

I suggested he would be perfect for the role back on the CBS message boards over 5 years ago. I received about the same resistance there as here (one said Weatherly was too old).

^ Tut tut, how very ageist. Mr Weatherly is definitely someone who is getting finer with age. I could see him as the ship's Doctor or Chief Engineer.

that reminds me how when I saw early promo photos of Star Trek 2009, that I though Karl Urban looked more like Gary Mitchel in TOS than McCoy. Mr Urban, has since of course made the role of McCoy his own!

Jeri Ryan would make a perfect Janice Rand

In my script (now in fan fiction to keep the ire of some Irish folks here down), the backhanded role (and actor) of Janice Rand (Grace Lee Whitney) are reprised by Jeri Ryan (who I believe would be perfect for the role in many ways).

The role itself is not the helpless female of the 1960s but a modern version of it with pitfalls and a character growth after hard knocks. And she is the hero of the script that saved the ship and saves the day.

Why not? Rather than simply being the Captain's Yeoman she could be head of the admin department, ship logistics manager, protocol officer.

Just wondering what this Rand is supposed to be. A low ranking yeoman seems unlikely. Unless Starfleet is a second career. Your suggestions make sense. She'd have to an older experienced officer of higher rank and position.

I'm a little confused. Why are we talking about what actor could play Janice Rand when we have no idea if Janice Rand is a character in CBS's new Star Trek series for 2017, which we know zero about in every aspect other than it's a new Trek series that's going to be on CBS All Access?

Yeah, the original intent for this thread wasn't to cast actors for specific roles (like Janice Rand) but think of actors that could work in brand new roles (supposing they will have a captain, doctor, engineer, etc.) Granted none of us will have any impact on real casting decisions but until any actual casting announcements are made it's fun to guess and hope.

Getting back on track: Danny Pudi. Might be cool to see him at the helm

Or maybe she'd just not that good at her job so is still a low-rank petty officer stuck cleaning up after a ship's captain

Hopefully she'll be busy with the x-files in 2017 but if she's not, I'd love to see Gillian Anderson as the captain in the new series.

I would really need to know more about the characters to suggest actors to fill the roles.

However, I would like to see Brent Spiner return in some sort of recurring comedic role akin to an somewhat eccentric Guinan/Boothby who doles out snarky comments and advice.

I would love to see Giancarlo Esposito. And since he did Revolution, it is probably safe to say he is willing to to a science fiction television show (and is in the right price range).

While the lack of representation for LGBT characters is well-known, I wonder what chances of a working class character or even an over-weight character? The consensus seems to be that it's OK for certain minorities not to be represented as their removal from future society is viewed as essentially desirable.

But I'd be quite relieved to know that they still exist.

With that in mind... Kathy Burke.

I'm not sure that concepts like working class exist in Trek's future the way we think of them, but I think we've had lots of characters who sort of were working class, such as O'Brien, Rom, Ro, Kira, Trip, etc.
Star Fleet would probably have fitness standards for it's members that wouldn't allow a seriously overweight crew member, but there have been characters carrying a little extra weight - Riker and O'Brien both were pleasantly husky. There have been any number of overweight supporting characters in the franchise - Lwaxana's boyfriend who was under societal pressure to commit suicide due to his age was heavy set for example.
I don't see either of those being all that underrepresented.

I've seen a lot but the one that I haven't heard but I think is a good idea: Summer Gaul.

Another suggestion: Michael Ironside.
He would be a good captain, abrasive but competent. Someone with a lot of experience. Kind of like a more disgruntled Picard.

Anyone have any other good suggestions or dream casting?
Summer Glau's a good call, even with her record of early cancellation, but Michael Ironside's a sure marker for a bad show.

I'd like to see Parminder Nagra in Trek somewhere down the line...
