This first part is not too surprising:

Although its been speculated for a while now, and reported on by us, it has officially been confirmed to us that Arthur Darvill will be considered a full time companion from the Christmas special onwards, finally getting a screen credit for his role as Rory Williams.
But this part is:

...both companions will be travelling in the TARDIS at Christmas, with a third expected to join during series 6
Please oh please let this third companion be River!! :bolian:

^I knew Billie Piper would be coming back to Doctor Who now that her other show is ending!

Oh God, don't even joke about that!

I'd like to see more male companions, so as to cut down on the possibility of the another pining, dewy-eyed young girl showing up again.

The third companion(most likely River) will presumably take over for Amy and Rory.

Doctor- Who are you?

River- you're going to find out very soon And I'm sorry, but that's when everything changes

yes now might be a good time to have the Doctor meet River, for the first time in her time line, when she is a little less all knowing.

Somehow I don't see River being dewy-eyed. She probably starts out detesting him.

River: "Hmmm.... got this new notebook... blue cover... all empty... what to put in it, what to put in it..."

Yay Rory!

I'm betting the third (whoever it is) will be more of a temporary (2-3 episode) companion. Like Capt. Jack.

*Activating wild speculation mode*

Unless the rumors about Amy having an announcement in the Christmas special turn out to be that she's pregnant.

Is there a nursery in the Tardis? ;)

I think that, for the sake of symmetry and romance, they very first time River meets the Doctor should be the very last time he sees her. Not necessarily because he dies, but he just knows they've run out of time. But if the last time he meets her is the first time she meets him, and the last time she meets him is the first time he meets her, in a way, they're together forever.

I still keep hoping that one of Amy's wedding presents will be an empty TARDIS-shaped journal. Perhaps a gift from her parents. Oh well...

Fantastic news! I figured he would be back for the entire season but I'm thrilled that he'll get a screen credit, too.

Absolutely wonderful!

But am I really the only person who doesn't want River to be the third companion? Besides getting someone new (hopefully someone who isn't contemporary perhaps even alien!), I don't want to have River in every episode. One of the interesting aspects of River is her mysterious relationship with The Doctor. I would much prefer her appearing two or three times throughout the season instead joining the TARDIS crew outright. At least not yet.

I'd prefer to see her play an important but recurring role in Series Six and then join the crew "permanently" in Series Seven. From there, I'd probably want her to stay at least until the Series Eight finale before she goes to meet her fate in the Library.

It will be a challenge for Moffat to figure out how to do her "final" Doctor Who story justice, I think. How do you say goodbye to a character that doesn't know she's leaving? How do you create the proper sense of catharsis for the audience?

I imagine it would be just prior to SitL, when the Doctor gives River the sonic screwdriver. He would seek her out to do that only if he didn't think he'd see her again. Maybe River finally lets him have a look at the book and realises that he's done everything in it.

They can't keep dangling River in front of us forever - she has to step up at some point, particularly since there is speculation that the man she is jailed for killing is the Doctor... probably on their honeymoon - lol. Could Smith only be planning to do two years? Say it isn't so....!

Well if Moffat follows through on his Time Traveller's Wife theme it seems likely. Which means of course that the Doctor will see River again after he gives her the screwdriver and she heads off to her death/computerised afterlife.

Man that's gonna hurt!

I really hope this isn't the case.
Oh, me too. That would be a terrible plot.

I know. :( The more I think about the weirdness of their relationship, the more sorry I feel for the both of them.
