Casting calls for Star Trek 3

I've thought for years Elba would be a great addition to Trek (thought as a series lead). I hope he does not play a villain. I'd rather he played a misguided figure, more along the lines of Matt Decker.

Many were saying after Prometheus was released that he'd make a great Starfleet captain.

Enterprise could find an old Federation starship that had been missing for years, the commander would be Elba. The ship could be the USS Prometheus. Diferent captain, diferent ship, but it would make people remember something. :p

Sure, make him Matt Decker. "Doomsday Machine" here we come!

Decker didn't have a British accent, so that would ruin it for me. Can Elba hide his? ;)

I don't know of Elba's work, but I'm excited over how many fans who post here are enthused by the possibility he'll be in the movie.

Like Cumberbatch, Elba plays a detective on British detective show that is popular with the Netflix/Prime/Hulu crowd. Whereas Cumberbatch is charming, Elba is all presence. I fear that he could easily outshine Pine et al.

That said, I have long wanted someone like Elba or Sofia Helin of The Bridge to be tapped as a Trek series lead. Given the popularity of Trek on streaming services, I would think it would be wise to tap into other popular streaming shows, especially those Scandinavian and British crime dramas. Part of it is to find a built in audience, but also because a new Trek series probably should be more like those foreign shows: 3-6 episodes with a strong arc. I think a great series could be built around Elba's talent.

Elba shouldn't play a Klingon because he's a "big burly black guy." He should play a Klingon because having a Klingon antagonist (he doesn't even have to be an out and out villain per se) given the events of Star Trek Into Darkness.

Interesting. ;)

I just hope they don't fall into the Trek(Berman-era) cliche and cast him as a Klingon because he's a tall black male.
How often did that happen? Most of the major Klingon guest roles I can think of were played by white guys. Of the black actors, Tony Todd as Kurn and James Avery as K'Vagh are the ones that spring to mind. And Tim Russ played a Klingon once

Michael Dorn and Alba, a good dual Klingons

I can't see them casting a popular choice like Elba just to bury his face in prosthetics.

Oh I dunno, I could see Elba as one of STID's 'Blingons' he'd be made up but you'd be clearly be able to see who it is - much like Nero in ST09, and the opposite of Ron Perlman in Nemesis.

^ Also like Chang in ST VI.

In that film Christopher Plummer asked to have less 'severe' Klingon makeup, and they handily obliged. In fact Chang is probably a QuchHa'. As Idris Elba's character might also be.

I think he'd be great as a Klingon. It's the 50th, the old mars bar heads have got to show up surely?

Cool, she was awesome in Kingsman. My first though was "Klingon warrior," although I could also see her potentially playing a Vulcan. Also, as much as I like Zoe Saldana, Boutella would DESTROY her in a straight-up fight. Actually, that's another thing that I liked about Kingsman, she got to have the big "final fight" with the hero (instead of being relegated to a "girl fight" cliché).
