CAST FOR THE HOBBIT ANNOUNCED

I wonder if they'll pull a Star Wars and re-edit the FOTR to have Freeman play Bilbo for the flashback.
I tend to think Jackson would keep the theatrical editions inviolate (though the Blu-Ray of Fellowship has a new audio mix), but I could see Jackson revising the scene in a future edition of the Extended Editions or the long-rumored Super Extended Editions.

I would be very surprised if PJ pulled a Lucas. Sometimes a character gets recast in a role and it's okay. Just look at the Batman and Iron Man sequels. *shrug*

I could take or leave Orlando Bloom, but Andy Serkis and Ian McKellen are essential; so I hope they clinch the deals there.

IIRC McKellen was the first actor to indicate an interest in returning in interviews some years back. So I always thought he was a lock. But then more recently when this thing seemed completely stalled he was supposedly quoted as saying he wasn't going to wait forever. I would like to think that if the project is up and running now he could still be counted on.

This.

I too, but I have to admit, that would be kinda cool.

You know who also thinks that would be kinda cool? Al Qaeda.
To take their views into account is to let them win. ;)

Unlike George...Peter has no precedent with altering his films. The only thing he has done is enhance them by giving us extended editions (something that Lucas has not done) which have only in a lot of fans eyes given the definitive versions of the films. I seriously doubt that he would go back and insert Martin Freeman in place of Ian Holm. I think much like fans have a problem with the Hayden scene there would be an outrage at this action as it would be scene as a slight against Ian. No I think PJ has more respect for Ian and his performance of Bilbo than to do that.

Gandalf is not a major part. It's "just" that the character starts the action. Gollum has one scene. Elrond is a background character who needn't even have a line. The elf king, who we learn from LOTR is Thranduil has a bigger scene than Elrond. It may be heretical but the only reason to worry about casting these parts with the LOTR actors is the desire to make a matched set of movies. This is curious because the books aren't.

If you're going to start fixating on LOTR characters, especially the additional scenes, Christopher Lee, as Saruman Head of the White Council and the dude who takes down the Necromancer is probably second only to Gandalf. Considering that the riddle scene takes place in the dark, the need for Serkis is not at all clear.

In The Hobbit, the major characters are Bilbo, Thorin, Smaug and Bard. Well, maybe Beorn. The other dwarves are pretty much indistinguishable, literally in the case of the twins, except for Bombur, who is just fat. The Master of Esgaroth is very important in the Bard subplot.

I'd counter that Gandalf is a major part: he sets up the inciting incident, is regarded by all and sundry as the "mentor" character archetype and has quite a lot to do within the story in several plot strands. How long has it been since you read the book?

Ahem... the fact that LOTR is a direct sequel to HOBBIT seems to belie your assertion. In addition one would imagine PJ's intention is to do precisely that: to "make a matched set of movies". The two stories are intertwined: one sets up the idea of the ring (within the story of Smaug and the dwarves regaining the mountain) and the other tells of it's significance and ultimate fate...

:wtf: What planet are you on? Serkis was employed on the first lot of films to provide not only the movement (for later CGI) but also, and one might say more importantly, the voice and character of Gollum (not easily impersonated). As Gollum has several lines of dialogue in "The Hobbit", surely Serkis would be sought to recapture the vocal performance?

Gandalf has a "small" role in The Hobbit, but he's there for most of the pivotal scenes and is very much a necessary character. Gandalf's role in the films will be much beefier, though, with the inclusion of the White Council assaulting the Necromancer at Dol Guldur. It would be a shame if Ian McKellen didn't return as Gandalf.

I resurrect this thread.

I was watching the Ricky Grevais Show on my DVR, and having just read "The Hobbit." I thought it would be great if they cast Ricky, Stephen Merchant, and Karl Pilkington as the voices of the three mountian trolls.

Just a thought,

Hm, I have to say that certainly has an appeal to it. They definitely have bickering down pretty good.
