Cast actors for AVENGERS II

^ Yup. They've done the same with Shane Black, whose only directing credit is the brilliant but financially underwhelming Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Which gave RDJ his best post-Chaplin and pre-Iron Man role, IMHO.

It probably also helps that these guys are cheap, of course!

Bradley Cooper isn't sleazy enough to play Doctor Strange.

I doubt his moustache could hypnotize anyone.

"Hypnotize" is 80s for daterape.

(Starfox anyone?)

Gigi Rice must have been soaking in Ted's stink of failure?

^Which is what makes it so impressive to me that Marvel was willing to trust Joss Whedon with The Avengers, the keystone of their entire movie universe, even though he only has one less-than-successful feature film to his credit as a director. It shows that they looked past the raw numbers and focused on creativity and substance instead.

I think he was the perfect choice to direct. 1. He knows how to create a strong ensemble of well written characters. 2. He has a lot of cred with the base audience.

Also: because he's not a huge director, he comes cheaper. Something Moneybags Marvel likes.

Oh, I definitely agree that Whedon is a great choice. I'm just saying that he doesn't look that way on paper or from a studio bean-counter's point of view, so it's good that they looked beyond that kind of conventional thinking.

Well, yes and no, I agree and disagree. I think from a typical studio, no, Whedon doesn't look good, but from Marvel's point of view (he's good with the geeks AND he's cheap) he's perfect.

^Well, yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying -- that Marvel Studios' point of view is not the conventional movie-studio way of thinking. They looked beyond the box-office numbers at other, more meaningful considerations.

If your strength comes from science or magic, it doesn't matter what your body looks like...

Imagine if Stephen Hawking picked up the hammer of Thor?

Great googley moogley, Thor had been majicked into a Frog once upon a time and that hammer did wonders for his general health
