Cardassian Union Search.

That's correct. In the 2386 and 2387 history updates for the game they mentioned that the Cardassians signed a treaty with the Federation that they would disband their military forces and Starfleet would then be responsible for defending the Union from invasion and attack. Their entire military isn't gone, they retain a small defence force.

I've c&p the relevant sections:

2386: In addition to working to curb the rising hostilities between the Klingons and the Gorn, Federation diplomats are hard at work crafting a new pact between the Federation and the Cardassians. On Stardate 63976.74, the Cardassians sign a new treaty, in which they agree not to field a military or wage war. In exchange, the Federation agrees to provide aid to rebuild Cardassian cities and protection in the event of an invasion of Cardassian space. In response to the landmark agreement, the Bajoran coalition drops its request to prosecute Cardassians for war crimes. Many among the Bajorans and Cardassians hope that someday relations between them will be normalized.

2387: Starfleet sends a fleet to Cardassia Prime to assist the Cardassians with the dismantling of their military, a process which is expected to take several years. The Cardassians plan to use a much smaller self defense force to patrol their space, and coordinate with Starfleet for issues outside of their borders.

Noooo! Why does it have to be the Cardassians! Let them take someone useless like the Klingons or the Borg. There destroying a great race that was created with alot of character depth.

They won't even be a 3rd rate power in Star Trek Online. What am I suppose to play a Romulan???

Once again I'm in full agreement with you here. It seems that the Cardassians can only be either complete villains and general evildoers or go straight to being Federation members or worse mere auxiliaries.

Where is the shade of grey, the complexion that gives the people of Cardassia such depth? Let them be a neutral but non-hostile power in the AQ.
Oh well at least the game will not involve the Klingons conquering the Cardassian Union again, Thank Oralius.

On the website in their characters trailer they show a Cardassian as a race you can play. You might be able to play as a Cardassian when the game is released. I say might as from a quick look at the STO forums no full official playable race list has been given out by the developers so things might change between the trailer and when the game is initially released.

But, generally, no matter what race you are you have to pick the Federation side or the Klingon side, do you not?

That's what I thought.

Meh. Couldn't they have come up with something a little more... varied? Or could the basic dynamics of the game not support multiple sides?

Indeed...and the fact that they butchered Macet in taking away those shades of grey--exactly one of the characters that ESTABLISHED that ambiguity...that's an outrage.

This game will be banned throughout Union territory...it's unpatriotic and insulting.

^ I read the same thing, that later the game might bring in not only the Romulans but the Dominion as well.

Going with just two sides is mostly likely just a cautious approach. Limit the universe initially to see how the game sells and what its retention is like. They have to have room to expand if the game does well, plus initially it is a lot easier to deal with if you just have two playable factions to manage then four or five.

If I see a Cardassian, wearing a Federation Uniform serving on a Star Fleet Ship >.> I am so done with this game if this is how its going to work out.

I wouldn't mind an exchange officer (especially because the reverse would be so, SO cool), but if it's this idea that the Cardassians get Federation-assimilated...ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Besides there already is a Cardassian in starfleet; Cadet Zurin Dakal of the USS Titan.
And I second Neryrs Ghemor's . Allies yes, but a mere member of the UFP no way on Prime!

That's what I figured.

Yeah... you'd think they would realize that there are fans out there who might want to play as their favorite race without 'plot compromises' to move the universe forward, especially since they seem to be of the mind of preserving Starfleet ships while stretching credibility. I mean, really, if the ships aren't that changed - if they still have Mirandas somewhat implausibly there 150+ years after they were launched (), why not let there be a new Cardassian Union? :cardie:

Maybe there'll be an expansion pack for rebel Cardassians.

It'll be the standard 'villainous Cardassian' plot in which a rogue Gul seeks to attack the Federation for no discernible reason(especially after Starfleet has taken a risk in giving aid to the Cardassian people) by either using another race as a proxy or the aid of the RSE.
Said Gul will launch several seank attacks on UFP and Klingon targets, at which point some loud mouth Klingon will belch something about honor and led at Klingon fleet to victory over the renegade.
Or a dissident will aid Starfleet againist those Cardassian rebels and will end up joining Starfleet at will point the remaining Cardassians will see the light and join the Federation, thus earning true enlightenment.

Or something to that effect:p
